1.      Organizational Context

 

  1. Organizational Setting

The post is located in the PCT Translation Division in the PCT Services Department of the Patents and Technology Sector. The PCT Translation Division is responsible for delivering high-quality publication-ready translation in relation to patent applications filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT).  In particular, the PCT Translation Division is responsible for the translation of scientific, technical and legal documents, mainly the abstracts of international patent applications and scientific, technical and legal reports relating to the patentability of inventions.

  1. Purpose Statement

As part of Asian Languages Section II, the incumbent is required to translate and self-revise specialized scientific and technical texts from Chinese into English in a timely and efficient manner. The incumbent is also required to contribute to other translation-related activities as required.

  1. Reporting Lines

The incumbent works under the supervision of the Head of the Asian Languages Section II.

 

2.      Duties and Responsibilities

 

The incumbent will perform the following principal duties\:

a.   Translate and self-revise texts in a wide range of scientific and technical subjects from Chinese into English, within the deadlines set and according to the performance standards of the Section;

b.   Modify and finalize abstracts provided by other translation suppliers on demand and with a very quick turnaround time;

c.   Participate in the compilation of the terminology database of the PCT Translation Division;

d.   Use computer-assisted translation, terminology and machine translation tools and perform the post-editing of machine translations for data collection, providing feedback on request;

e.   Perform other related duties as required.

 

3.      Requirements

 

Education (Essential)

First level university degree in modern languages, linguistics, in a scientific or technical field, or in a related field.

Education (Desirable)

Advanced university degree in translation.

Experience (Essential)

At least three years of relevant professional experience and demonstrated ability to perform technical translation from Chinese to English.  An advanced university degree in one of the aforementioned disciplines may be accepted in lieu of two years of experience.

Language (Essential)

Mother tongue level of English and excellent knowledge of Chinese (first working language).

Language (Desirable)

Knowledge of other PCT publication languages (Arabic, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish).

Knowledge of translation technology and software tools that aid the translation process.
Ability to grasp scientific and technical issues in a wide variety of fields.
Ability to work accurately and to respect strict deadlines.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to maintain effective partnerships and working relations in a multi-cultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

Annual salary\:

Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment.  Please note that this estimate is for information only.  The post adjustment multiplier (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change (increase or decrease) without notice.  The figures quoted below are based on the February 2021 rate of 89.4%

Salaries and allowances are paid in Swiss francs at the official rate of exchange of the United Nations.

Temporary appointments are renewable, subject to continuing needs, availability of budget and satisfactory performance with a maximum cumulative length of two years.
