ORGANIZATIONAL SETTING

The KAICIID Establishment Agreement calls for the Centre to enhance communication and information exchange in order to facilitate interreligious and intercultural dialogue and cooperation among people. The Communications Department engages KAICIID’s audiences with information that fosters an up-to-date, actionable and relevant understanding of the Centre’s mission and work. Its goal is to win support for the Centre’s mandate and a positive reception of the outcomes its work achieves.

GENERAL SCOPE OF ROLE

The KAICIID Communications Department provides multimedia news coverage and engaging feature content on the Centre’s programming, as well as on issues related to the KAICIID mandate.

The Centre is looking for experienced freelance journalists who will provide regular news updates and videos, reportage and photo essays, feature stories, and interviews, and in general contribute to regular reporting on the Centre’s work in the Arab Region.  

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

  • Liaises with project managers and field staff to identify strong story ideas and leads.
  • Regularly pitches news and feature story opportunities to the KAICIID Communications Department.
  • Conducts face-to-face or phone interviews whenever possible to gather compelling stories and information
  • Rewrites and edits copy to ensure it is ready for publication.
  • Identifies and coordinates opportunities to expand and retell stories through other media, such as multimedia
  • Consults on opportunities for media outreach
  • Serves as project manager/coordinator for other designated consultants on the ground, such as photographers or videographers

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • University degree in journalism, English, communications or the equivalent;
  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible and relevant experience in professional news reporting or related field;
  • Demonstrated ability to write consistently clean, compelling copy;
  • Multimedia skills (photography and video) are an advantage;
  • Proven experience in producing well-researched, insightful content;
  • Keen understanding of the local social, cultural, and political context;
  • Adherence to journalism ethics and impartiality;
  • Experience covering religion or conflicts is an advantage;
  • Technical ability to conduct interviews or research stories, or provide multimedia content (journalists must own their own equipment including laptop, phone, cameras, etc.)
  • Fluency (both speaking and writing) in English and Arabic. French is desirable.

TERMS OF ENGAGEMENT

The selected candidate shall be offered a long term consultancy agreement (LTA). The Services shall be provided on an “as and when required” and a non-exclusive basis based on requirements/instructions provided by the Communications Department.

The Journalists are expected to maintain a consistent style for delivered content.

The Journalists will be provided with the relevant material/information which the Centre considers necessary for performing the services. The Centre and the Journalists may exchange additional information and documentation that might be required by the Journalists in order to understand the scope and nature of the requirements of the Centre.  Upon conclusion of such exchange, the Journalists shall provide a binding quotation on the requested Services.

  • Per word rate for news or feature stories
  • Rates for a half and full day of photography (if the Consultant possesses these skills)
  • Rates for videography (if the Consultant possess these skills)
