Sanitation and Water for All (SWA) is a global partnership with over 300 members including national governments, donors, civil society organizations, private sector organizations and other development partners, working together to increase political commitment to water supply, sanitation and hygiene. More information on SWA’s website. UNICEF hosts the Secretariat of SWA. The communications of SWA are managed and coordinated by a Communications Specialist (CS). The CS works with a wider network of suppliers, from designers to copywriters, from video producers to translators. At the end of 2020 the SWA Communications team finalized a draft zero of the SWA Impact Booklet. In this Booklet, SWA will show the impact of the partnership's work, through collaboration with many different partners across the globe. It currently includes 16 impact stories (around 1 -page each) and reflection on tracking impact through advocacy and political engagement. The Impact Booklet will be a living document, as SWA collects and adds more case-studies. The case-studies in the Booklet will also be use in other platform, such as the SWA website or presentations.

How can you make a difference?

SWA is running looking to hire a professional editor to finalize the Impact Booklet.

Expected results: (measurable results)

Under the supervision of Communications Specialist, and with the guidance of the CEO and the Monitoring & Evaluation and Knowledge Manager, we invite consultants to indicate their interest to undertake the following tasks:

Phase 1: Planning and consultation

    • Advise the CT in the strategic approach and use of the Impact Booklet;
    • Identify information gaps, co-ordinate and draft new content – including liaising with key SWA partners and staff as required (by phone, skype, or email) to gather relevant information;
    • As needed, rework existing material, crafting a consistent, accessible tone, and developing a clear and informative document structure for publication;

Phase 2: Draft and revisions

    • Review different information sources to develop 5 to 10 of new impact stories;
    • Ensuring that impact stories in the booklet reflect: 1) each of SWA’s new strategic objectives and 2) knowledge and learning from each of the three SWA regions
    • Prepare first draft, second draft and final version of the Impact Booklet; incorporating inputs, and including final copy-editing and proof-reading (including after the report goes to the designer), to ensure the booklet is ready for publication.

Phase 3: Finalization

    • Make recommendations for future development and cataloguing of impact stories.
    • Incorporating feedback from CT, SWA Secretariat, SWA Executive Oversight Committee
    • Support CT in briefing the designer to finalize Impact Booklet, including final proofread, and making any additional necessary changes
    • Provide recommendations for future use of Impact Booklet, and the development and cataloguing of future SWA impact stories

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

The following demonstrated experience, knowledge, technical background and competencies required: 

  • A Bachelor’s degree in English, humanities, or social sciences
  • At least six (6) years of senior-Level professional work experience in a relevant field;
  • Previous report writing experience for organizations working on advocacy (vs. implementing project with quantitative results) highly desirable;
  • Knowledge of or work with SWA is highly desirable;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, of publication standard;

Remarks:

Duty Station

Remote based. No travel required. The consultant will be available by email, telephone and skype to facilitate inputs to and production of the report.

PROPOSED PAYMENT SCHEDULE

By Deliverable

Payment upon deliverables/milestones:  UNICEF will only make milestone payment based on achievement of specific deliverables as listed on the table above. These payments should be stated in terms of percentage.  Also note that UNICEF does not make advance payment except under certain conditions in line with UNICEF Financial Rules and Regulations.

SWA is hosted by UNICEF. The Fund is administered under UNICEF’s financial, human resources and administrative rules and regulations, while operations are run by the Fund’s own independent governance structure that provides strategic guidance and oversight to its investments. SWA’s day-to-day activities are carried out by a Secretariat under the direction of the Sanitation Water for All, Director.

If selected for this post, the resulting appointment will be limited to SWA, a UNICEF hosted fund.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.
