Since 1999, the IRC has developed partnerships with New York City public schools, community-based organizations and local colleges and universities to support the positive development of refugee youth and their communities in New York City.The Education & Learning department provides year round programming working directly with refugee youth, their parents and families, and their schools.

Scope of Work:

The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) is a six-week program focusing on preparing newly arrived refugee youth to succeed at their grade level in the New York City public school system. Up to 130 students from ages 5 – 21 from over 20 countries will participate in academic, creative arts, social-emotional learning, physical education, and life skills classes. Field trips are held on Fridays.

As part of the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy, the Social Emotional Learning Teacher will adapt and implement the IRC SEL curriculum across all grade levels in support of students’ social-emotional development. The Social Emotional Learning Teacher will instruct a total of 12 lessons each week: two SEL lessons per week, per student group (three Lower School groups, plus three Upper School groups.) The three, daily, hour-long lessons are held between 12:30pm and 3:30pm, Monday - Thursday.

SEL lessons are an integral part of NYSA’s Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS a model that structures expectations for students and staff to create a positive culture and climate for learning and personal growth, ensuring students feel safe, feel a sense of belonging, and are interested in learning. The SEL class is considered an MTSS Tier 1 (universal) support, provided to all students. Following pre-program training, the SEL Teacher will be expected to understand how her/his contributions fit into the larger MTSS model for supporting students at the Academy and liaise with other professionals accordingly, especially the classroom teaching staff and the Student Support Team.

Position term:    June 29 – August 13, 2021

Hours:

• Training: June 29, 30 & July 1: Up to 24 hours of training, 9:00AM – 5:00PM

O Foundational online training modules to be completed independently ahead of synchronous staff training dates

• Main Program: July 6 – August 13: Monday – Thursday, 4 hours per day plus 1 evening of parent/teacher conferences.Expect 2-3 hours per week of external planning, grading, and assessment analysis.

 

 

Major Responsibilities:

• Participate in the Teachers Meet & Greet (tentatively scheduled for June 17, 2021), collaborative planning sessions with the Dean of Instruction, pre-program All Staff training, and all program meetings and staff development activities, thereafter

• Drawing from IRC materials, plan a 6-week culturally- and developmentally-responsive curriculum

• Plan for sheltered instructional approaches for English Language Learners/multilingual learners (SIOP), K-12 in the curriculum

• On a weekly basis, submit daily lesson plans, slide decks, and and materials

• Perform formal pre-, formative, and post-assessments to inform planning and instruction. Record student observations on IRC-defined indicators of school readiness. Complete the all staff program evaluation

• Regularly review student progress and maintain student data bodies of evidence

• Complete all required reporting on time. Comply with all IRC policies and protocols

• Rigorously plan for, incorporate, and manage Classroom Culture Lead Teachers and volunteer Peer Mentors into SEL classroom instruction

• Participate in one after-school parent/teacher conference evening during summer school

• Complete weekly progress reports and final report cards for each student
