Internship for Burkina Faso Energy Sector Analysis (Seoul)

 

The Global Green Growth Institute internship program (also called "Grow Green" Program) provides a unique learning opportunity for students and recent graduates from diverse academic backgrounds. Current Opportunity

 

We are looking for a talented individual to work with us in the Climate Action and Inclusive Development unit (CAID) to support the development of energy consumption scenarios for Burkina Faso, including associated projections for greenhouse gas emissions. The development of energy consumption scenarios is part of a larger project, aimed at drafting a low emissions development strategy for the Government of Burkina Faso. The successful candidate is going to work for six months with an experienced GGGI analyst, who will lead the work concerning the energy sector.

The assignment will include the following but will not be limited to: 

    • Support the development of an energy balance for Burkina Faso covering a minimum period of 10 years (2008-2018) by gathering relevant data from different sources and relevant literature, compiling data into Excel, checking the data for correctness, and highlighting discrepancies in the data,
    • Support the development of projections in Excel for energy supply, consumption and transformation for Burkina Faso covering the period of 2019-2050, using yearly growth rates based on historical trends; existing projections for population, GDP and electricity access; official targets; and projections from relevant literature,
    • Support the development of electricity load profiles in Excel for Burkina Faso’s main networks, likely based on data provided by the utility,
    • Support the development of greenhouse gas emission projections for the energy sector in Excel, applying the IPCC methodology for greenhouse gas inventories (tier 1), and
    • Support the drafting of the energy chapter of Burkina Faso’s low emissions development strategy by gathering relevant information from literature and drafting individual sections of the chapter (optional).

 

 

Eligibility                                              

Applicants to the GGGI internship program must at the time of application one of the following requirements:

    • Bachelor’s degree, enrollment in Master’s or PhD program prior to internship assignment, or a recent graduate within the last 12 months.
    • Be engaged or recently engaged in academic study in a field directly related to the Institute’s work
    • Possess an excellent command of English.

 

 

Qualification
    • Bachelor’s degree or currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program in economics, statistics, engineering, mathematics, or related fields.
    • Experience in collecting, compiling, visualizing, and analyzing national level statistics and data.
    • Experience in interpreting data (comparability of different sources, trends, inconsistencies, etc.) and putting individual quantitative indicators in the context of a larger analysis.
    • Good Microsoft Excel skills are highly desired, including use of formulas, IF function, look-ups, compound interest, and designing graphs and charts.
    • A basic understanding of energy statistics, in particular energy balances, is an asset.
    • Familiarity with the IPCC methodology for greenhouse gas inventories (tier 10 is an asset.
    • Good level of English (verbal and written).

Important information:
    • Duration: The internship program is for at least three months and up to six months. Once selected, interns must begin your internship either prior to or within 12 months of graduation. 
    • Stipend: GGGI interns receive a monthly stipend of USD$500 per month. All costs related to travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses must be borne by either the interns or their sponsoring institutions.  
    • Visa: GGGI will provide a supporting letter for visa. Interns will be responsible for obtaining and financing the necessary visas.  
    • Travel: Intern will arrange and finance their travel to the internship location.  
    • Medical Insurance: Interns must present proof of valid medical insurance to GGGI upon returning the signed internship contract.
    • Confidentiality: Interns must keep confidential any and all unpublished information obtained during the course of the internship and may not publish any documents based on such information.  
    • Academic Credit: Interns may get academic credit from their institution of higher education for the internship. Interns need to check with their university to confirm their academic credit policy for internships.  
    • Working Hours: interns are expected to work during normal working hours. Leave should be pre-approved by the Intern Manager, and the latter should inform the Office of HR accordingly.
    • Learning Outcomes: before completion of the internship, Intern Managers are expected to review the learning outcomes with the intern.
    • Certificate: provided upon successful completion of the internship, upon request.
