Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Under the supervision of the Unit Supervisor within the Field Technology services Section (FTS), the Telecommunications Technician (Radio) will be responsible for:

Actioning work orders assigned by the unit supervisor;

  • Assist with the installation of VHF, UHF and HF Mobile (primarily Motorola, Jotron & Codan), base stations and repeaters, trunking radio systems, antennas and related equipment;
  • Programm radios, preventive and corrective maintenance on various types of radio;
  • Work on communications towers and masts up to a height of 50 meters;
  • Assist in the installation of outdoor communications equipment and antennas;
  • Train non-technical radio users on the operation of hand-held radios, mobile radios, base stations;
  • Carry out the installation of auxiliary equipment such as power supplies, solar power systems, UPS units, Voltage Regulators, DC converters and various protection and remote-control systems;
  • Carry out regularly scheduled and preventative and corrective maintenance on telecommunications installations and equipment;
  • Organize the receiving/inspection of new equipment;
  • Performing other related duties as required.
Qualifications/Requirements Required degree level: Technical/Vocational diploma Education - Additional Comments:
  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional supplemental courses and technical certification in electronic telecommunications, computer technology or other related field is highly desirable.
Required experience: 36 Months Experience remark:
  • Minimum 3 years experience working with Radio Trunking equipment ( TETRA), HF and VHF networks.
  • Have a valid driver’s license and proven ability to drive manual gear 4x4 vehicles;
Language skills:
  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • Arabic(Optional), Level - Working Knowledge
Area of expertise: Electrical engineering Area of expertise details:
  • Practical training should include radio communications, voice and data communications;
  • At least 4 years of relevant and progressive hands-on telecommunications experience at the national or international level in the public or private sector working with sophisticated radio communications equipment.
  • Experience in certification to plan, climbing and erecting telecommunications towers is highly desirable; Rigging certificate an asset;
  • Experience in TETRA trunking systems is a plus;
  • Understanding of satellite earth station technology;
  • Knowledge of basic electronic engineering;
  • Excellent written and spoken English; knowledge of other languages spoken in South Sudan and/or other UN language/s is an advantage;
  • Solid computer skills, including full proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word etc) and other IT applications and office technology equipment;
  • Have affinity with or interest in humanitarian relief, post-conflict situations, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System;
  • Sound security awareness
