Communication Officer

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 35 years old, unless specified otherwise below. Applicants must be nationals of or legal residents in the country of assignment.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Communication Specialist or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer Communication Officer will:

Content Production

  • Produce advocacy and communication materials (e.g. briefing notes, images, videos, presentations etc.) that meet the standards set out in the Communication, Public Advocacy and Engagement Strategy 2017-2021, supporting national and local communication strategies.
  • Produce articles, press releases, human interest stories and other advocacy/information materials for both web-based and traditional media, as appropriate.
  • Follow up on the production of advocacy and communication materials (e.g., films, videos, audio-visuals, etc.) and oversee the qualitative aspects of production, (e.g., quality control, translations, reviews of layout and graphic design etc.).
  • Develop communication activities related to UNICEF initiatives in Southeast Territory, mainly in São Paulo, such as Crescer com Proteção, Trilhas Digitais, Programa Engaja, Geração que Move, 1MIO, Comitê Paulista para Prevenção de Homicídios de Adolescentes. in close collaboration to partners communication teams as well working with different providers as designers, photographers, media agencies.
  • Establish or maintain an up-to-date documentation centre for communication materials including publications, press releases and clippings, photographs, audio-visual materials, web resources etc.

Media Relations

  • Maintain and update media relations contact list/database. Ensure rapid and accurate information dissemination to the media.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining close collaboration with mass media, as well as with groups and organizations whose support is essential to the achievement of advocacy and communication objectives.
  • Prepare background communication and promotional materials for briefing and visits of media and other special interest groups. Assist in the planning, logistic and administrative arrangements for them.
  • Monitor and evaluate the use and effectiveness of media materials.

Public Advocacy

  • Support Southeast Territory Chief, Chief of São Paulo office and Communication Specialist in implementing an advocacy strategy at state and municipal level, based on the overarching advocacy strategy of the Country Office. with special attention to opportunities related to the COVID-19 pandemic, safe return to school, vaccination, mental health, learning and working opportunities for adolescents, violence prevention and end of racism and discrimination.
  • Monitor and evaluate the appropriate and timely dissemination of advocacy and communication materials to target audiences and participate in the evaluation of their impact.
  • Ensure good quality data collection, analysis and evaluation and reporting to ensure effective communication strategies, planning and effective and efficient advocacy.
  • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications/Requirements Required degree level: Master degree or equivalent Education - Additional Comments:

Master’s degree in a relevant area, e.g. Strategic Communication or area related to Communication, Human Rights, Human Development.

OR Bachelor´s Degree in relevant area with 2 additional years of work experience in the area.

Candidates with les than35 years of age that meet the education/experience criteria may be considered.

Required experience: 96 Months Experience remark:
  • Eight (8 ) years of professional experience , of which at least five (5) years of professional work experience at the national and/or international level in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations or other relevant programmes; experience with digital media is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization;
Language skills:
  • English(Mandatory), Level - Working Knowledge

  • Spanish(Optional), Level - Working Knowledge
Area of expertise: Journalism, mass media and broadcasting, Public information and reporting, Knowledge management, archiving and documentation Area of expertise details:
  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;
  • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
  • Sound security awareness;
  • Have affinity with or interest in children and adolescents rights, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.
