Initial duration of contract is one year, with possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funds.

OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST
Located in the western area of the Haram al-Sharif, Jerusalem, the Al-Aqsa Mosque Center for the Restoration of Islamic Manuscripts in Jerusalem (hereafter the Manuscripts Center or the Center) holds a unique collection of Islamic manuscripts. Since 1999, UNESCO is working with the Awqaf of Jerusalem and of Amman, for the creation of the Center to safeguard this unique heritage. Three phases have already been successfully implemented and the Center is currently operational and is already restoring manuscripts. In agreement with the Awqaf, UNESCO is implementing a new phase of the project Supporting the Institutional Sustainability of Al-Aqsa Mosque Center for the Restoration of Islamic Manuscripts in Jerusalem: Phase IV: Consolidation of skills and Exit Strategy, financed by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The objective of this fourth phase is to make of the Center an autonomous and sustainable entity able to safeguard this unique Islamic heritage. The project will be implemented over an estimated period of three years and includes:
- A conservation assessment of the Center;
- the elaboration of Conservation and management exit strategy and ten-year vision;
- the reinforcement of the capacities of the staff;
- the restoration of the premises;
- the digitization and inventory of the collections;
- and the human and material reinforcement of the Center.
Long Description
Under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for Culture, the guidance of the Director of the Culture and Emergencies Entity, the general supervision of the Head of the Movable Heritage and Museums Unit and the direct supervision of the Programme Specialist in charge of the programme on Museums, the incumbent will implement the following tasks:
- Contribute to the timely implementation of the project "Supporting the Institutional Sustainability of Al-Aqsa Mosque Center for the Restoration of Islamic Manuscripts in Jerusalem", which corresponds to the above-mentioned Phase IV : “Consolidation of skills and Exit Strategy”;
- Ensure smooth communication and secure coordination between the Movable Heritage and Museums Unit at UNESCO Headquarters, the Awqaf of Jerusalem, the Awqaf of Jordan, the UNESCO Office in Amman and the UNESCO Office in Ramallah and other relevant stakeholders for the preparation and implementation of the project;
- Provide assistance regarding the planning of activities as per the approved Project Document, including the human and material restructuration of the Centre (recruitment of restorers, research Officer, administrative Officer and community outreach Officer, reinforcement of the capacities of the staff, restructuration and renovation of the Center, procurement of equipment), as well as the translation and publication of relevant scientific material;
- Contribute to the drafting of documents including reports, correspondence and other documents, prepare missions, attend online or presential meetings and take notes when necessary;
- Contribute to the monitoring and reporting on the activities through UNESCO’s SISTER;
- Implement adequate research for the smooth implementation of the project.
Education
- Advanced University degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in the field of culture.
Work Experience
- Minimum 1 year of relevant work experience in the field of culture.
Skills/Competencies
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain effective working relations within a multicultural environment.
- Close attention to detail and quality of work, and ability to manage heavy workloads.
- Organizational and planning skills and ability to prioritize tasks.
- Excellent writing skills, including ability to draft, edit and produce reports on relevant issues.

Languages
- Excellent knowledge of English, good knowledge of French.
