The International Rescue Committee in Salt Lake City is a refugee resettlement agency providing two year case management to 1200 refugees in Salt Lake County. Our services are intended to smooth the path to self-sufficiency, through employment and engagement in the community. To support this goal, IRC SLC operates diverse programs to support refugees’ lives and livelihoods including New Roots in Salt Lake City (New Roots SLC), a multi-faceted food security and agriculture program founded in 2010, which offers refugees, many of whom come from agricultural backgrounds, opportunities to engage in community gardening and small scale farming opportunities to improve their physical, psychosocial, and financial wellbeing. New Roots SLC operates three farmers markets, the Sunnyvale Farmers Market, and two farmers markets in South Salt Lake and downtown Salt Lake City, which seeks to connect New Roots SLC farmers with community members and allow community members to access healthy, culturally-appropriate produce. To further the impacts of New Roots SLC food access programming, New Roots SLC runs emergency food assistance pantries at these markets and assists with distribution of summer meals to youth at the market.

The New Roots SLC Farmers Market Summer Associate will support New Roots’ food access initiates through the development and implementation of outreach and food assistance distribution efforts through three weekly farmers markets.
