The International Rescue Committee in Salt Lake City is a refugee
resettlement agency providing two year case management to 1200 refugees in Salt
Lake County. Our services are intended to smooth the path to self-sufficiency,
through employment and engagement in the community. To support this goal, IRC
SLC operates diverse programs to support refugees’ lives and livelihoods
including New Roots in Salt Lake City (New Roots SLC), a multi-faceted food
security and agriculture program founded in 2010, which offers refugees, many of
whom come from agricultural backgrounds, opportunities to engage in community
gardening and small scale farming opportunities to improve their physical,
psychosocial, and financial wellbeing. New Roots SLC operates three farmers
markets, the Sunnyvale Farmers Market, and two farmers markets in South Salt
Lake and downtown Salt Lake City, which seeks to connect New Roots SLC farmers
with community members and allow community members to access healthy,
culturally-appropriate produce. To further the impacts of New Roots SLC food
access programming, New Roots SLC runs emergency food assistance pantries at
these markets and assists with distribution of summer meals to youth at the
market.
The New Roots SLC Farmers Market Summer Associate will support New Roots’ food access initiates through the development and implementation of outreach and food assistance distribution efforts through three weekly farmers markets.
The position lasts from June 7-Aug 16, 2021
Summer Associates receive:
A living allowance for the time served ($1040 a month), which is equivalent to the amount received by full-time members serving in the area.
Choice between a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award ($1,289.95), or an end-of-service summer stipend. Only those Summer Associates who successfully complete their full term of service are eligible to receive the education award or end-of-service summer stipend.
Major Responsibilities:
Recruit and train volunteers to help run two weekly food pantries and distribute children’s lunches at the Sunnyvale Farmers Market and two additional markets, and to assist with outreach efforts in the neighboring communities of the Sunnyvale Farmers Market and New Roots farmers markets.
Facilitate the ordering, pickup and delivery of emergency food assistance items while maintaining a positive relationship with suppliers, and work to increase the number of distributions made through the mobile emergency food pantry and summer meals program over those made in 2019. Track all numbers and data to show the success of the food access initiatives at the Sunnyvale Farmers Market and additional markets.
Coordinate weekly pickup of donated produce from community partners including Green Urban Lunchbox.
Work with Farmer Empowerment Coordinator to develop trainings for farmers selling at markets, and assist in the delivery of training to farmers, and track data on their skill acquisition and improvement
Work with farmers to implement skills gained, observe and document additional skills needed, and work with New Roots team to refine curricula.
Improve New Roots SLC’s outreach plan, focusing on informing refugee, new American, and low-income community members of food access resources including the Sunnyvale Farmers Market and other New Roots farmers markets, and work towards increasing community awareness and engagement to expand community knowledge and support of the Sunnyvale Farmers Market food access initiatives
Maintain food safety, hygiene, and social distancing protocols at farm and market sites.
