OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST Background

The World Heritage in Young Hands Kit is one of the main tools of the World Heritage Education (WHE) programme, designed to aid secondary school teachers. Developed in 1998, The Kit is an educational resource based on an interdisciplinary approach, seeking to involve teachers across curricula in raising the awareness of young people of the importance of World Heritage. It encourages creative and participatory methods of teaching, by involving students in research and ICT, collection and analysis of data, in role-playing and simulation exercises, and in undertaking field trips. Since its publication, the Kit has been warmly welcomed by the States Parties and has been translated into 40 national language versions (making it one of UNESCO's most translated publications).

The existing content of the Kit is retained mostly from the original version of 1998 and does not reflect the development and evolution of the 1972 Convention. In addition, the Kit’s content (copyright agreements, figures and statistics, case studies and examples, etc.) is out of date and not in line with UNESCO’s Open Access Policy. Therefore, there is an urgent need for updating the contents of this Kit to make it relevant for the present day and accessible (via Open Access), especially owing to the continued interest of the State Parties in translating the Kit to their national languages. (For further information, please refer to the English version of the Kit, at the following link: https://whc.unesco.org/en/educationkit/)

Long Description

In this regard, the incumbent will work under the overall authority of the Chief of the Policy and Statutory Meetings Unit at the World Heritage Centre (WHC) of the Culture Sector, UNESCO and in close collaboration with the World Heritage Education Programme and other units at WHC as required, to prepare a complete and comprehensive update of Kit, by assuming the tasks described below.

  • Reshape certain existing sections of the Kit by inserting specific information such as elements of other UNESCO cultural conventions to supplement and enhance the work of the 1972 Convention; and redesign sections (like the World Heritage Convention and the nomination process) to simplify them for classroom teaching.
  • Replace sections of the Kit that are out of date (such as tourism, global networking and the internet, etc.) with current information on the evolving themes and terminologies.
