Background on AmeriCorps VISTA:

Founded in 1965, Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) is a federal national service program designed to provide needed resources to nonprofit organizations and public agencies to increase their capacity to lift Americans out of poverty. In 1993, VISTA was incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs, housed at the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). AmeriCorps VISTA supports efforts to alleviate poverty by recruiting Americans 18 years and older from a diverse range of backgrounds to dedicate a year of full-time service with a sponsoring organization ("sponsor") to create or expand programs designed to empower individuals and communities in overcoming poverty.

Job Overview:

This VISTA position will serve with the IRC Salt Lake City East African Refugee Goat Project. The Financial Capability VISTA will develop programming for members of the East African refugee communities that focuses primarily on financial literacy training, goat-related entrepreneurial activities, and financial management and profit-sharing within the Goat Project. This VISTA member will serve an integral role in assisting community members to take on managerial aspects of the Goat Project and improving the economic wellbeing of the target refugee communities.

Major Responsibilities: 

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

·Establish community relationships to improve access to Goat Project resources for target refugee communities.  

·Identify and build out opportunities for leveraging Goat Project assets to meet the socioeconomic needs of target refugee communities.

·Develop a profit-sharing program whereby communities can access Goat Project profits to support specific community needs, such as youth scholarships, community improvement projects, and household-level grants.

·Develop and implement workshops and trainings to engage community members in goat-related entrepreneurial activities, such as commercial meat sales and paid offsite grazing.

·Streamline and improve access to goat purchases for participating communities.

·Build financial capability among members of the Refugee Youth 4-H Goat Club.

·Recruit and train volunteers to assist with program activities.

·Create record-keeping systems for Goat Project data management.

AmeriCorps VISTA Benefits:

·Living allowance ($990 per month, pre-taxes).

·At the end-of-year of service, the VISTA can choose an Education Award ($5,730) or End of Service Cash Stipend ($1,500).
