The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. Overview of CHAI’s Vaccines Program

To ensure all children have access to effective and affordable immunization, addressing the main causes of child mortality, CHAI’s Vaccines Markets Team works with vaccine manufacturers, Gavi and other global stakeholders to improve availability, affordability and diversity of supply for existing and future Gavi vaccines. In doing this, CHAI is applying the techniques it has used successfully to improve access to HIV/AIDS and malaria treatment: improving market demand transparency for individual suppliers, and working closely with these suppliers to optimize their commercial, costing and pricing strategies in low and middle income markets, to ensure availability of vaccines, keep prices in these markets affordable, yet commercially sustainable.

As part of this work, CHAI is supporting Gavi and other stakeholders to improve access to vaccines for non-Gavi and former-Gavi middle income countries, through policy as well as supplier and country guidance on vaccine access and procurement. These middle-income countries sometimes lag behind lower income countries in introducing new vaccines, as they cannot rely on donor funding and visibility on access conditions for suppliers may be limited.

Close collaboration with CHAI’s country teams and global vaccine delivery team is critical in this area of work.

Since 2011, CHAI has worked in vaccine market shaping and has negotiated price reductions for major vaccines. For example, earlier work has resulted in a reduction in the price of rotavirus vaccine by two-thirds, resulting in savings of over USD$600M for global donors and governments over 5 years and a reduction in the price of pentavalent vaccine by 45%, generating savings of $150M over 4 years.

The pandemic context has only reinforced the importance of CHAI’s Vaccines Markets team’s work, coupling the need to ensure supply security for existing vaccines, for which demand and supply dynamics are being disrupted, with the need to accelerate time to market of a suitable COVID-19 vaccine on an unprecedented time frame. CHAI is working closely with many partners towards this goal.

Overview of CHAI Ghana

Over the last few decades, Ghana’s Ministry of Health (MoH) has made significant progress in increasing access to vaccines in Ghana. However, service delivery challenges still exist. To address these challenges, CHAI Ghana’s (CHAI GH) team is supporting the MoH at national, regional and district levels to implement a broad range of activities, across demand generation, supply chain strengthening, service delivery expansion, quality improvement and strengthened program monitoring and evaluation, aimed at significantly increasing uptake of quality health services.

Since its inception in 2018, CHAI Ghana has been supporting the Ghanaian government to strengthen the overall healthcare service delivery system through our sexual reproductive health, childhood cancer, sickle-cell disease, HIV/AIDs, and malaria programs. Our work has involved supporting the government with improving access to quality diagnostics and treatment across our programs. Furthermore, we provide technical support on health financing by helping the government identify operational gaps, track spending and better finance management. CHAI Ghana complements its support to the government with capacity building initiatives to improve the quality of care, patient education and awareness, and retention.

CHAI Ghana, together with its partners, aims to support Ghana to strengthen the overall healthcare treatment through resource planning and supply chain management for patient care delivery.
