BACKGROUND:

The IRC New York Regional office’s Education & Learning department aims to meet the educational needs of adult refugee, asylee, and immigrant populations in New York City. We offer a variety of classes and services, including English language instruction, Cultural Orientation, and referrals to external educational opportunities. Together, these form a comprehensive multi-faceted program designed to meet the immediate and ongoing edcation needs of our diverse group of clients.

SCOPE OF WORK:
Intern will work one on one with IRC clients who want to pursue higher and continuing education opportunities and help them achieve their short- and long-term goals.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
The College and Career Readiness Advisor Intern will
·       Get hands-on experience working with refugee populations soon after they arrive in the US
·       Learn about the refugee resettlement process in NYC
·       Build communication and outreach skills with different stakeholders

Essential Job Functions:
Conduct intakes for walk-in asylees and refugees regarding educational and vocational goals
Work with participant to create SMART educational and professional goals
Assist participants in completing college applications and financial aid (FAFSA)
Provide assistance to participants in editing college essays and other related college requirements
Update databases based on referrals and maintain participant records databases
Assist in organizing monthly workshops
Ability to commit during the week for six months
