OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

Eradication of polio from Afghanistan and certification of its eradication.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

The incumbent will perform the following duties:

1. Provide technical advice and oversee the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of Supplemental immunization activities (Supplementary Immunization Activities) in the field and develop related technical reports.

2. Lead the achievement/maintenance of certification standard Acute Flaccid Paralysis Surveillance including routine reporting and active surveillance, make improvements to the existing surveillance systems.

3. Undertake regular Performance reviews to ensure proper performance; research, compile and evaluate a variety of related data; provide recommendations concerning appropriate response to identified risks and implementation of preventative measures.

4. Update guidelines, training modules and other materials; co-develop monitoring and evaluation tools.

5. Act as a resource person in training/orientation programmes and other capacity building activities for national and field staff; prepare and deliver presentations; compile, develop and distribute related informational materials.

6. Undertake advocacy activities and represent the country office in meetings with senior officials to ensure their full support and commitment, promote WHO's position and engage new partners to strengthen Routine Immunization/Poliomyelitis Eradication activities.

7. Coordinate with the local health authorities on routine immunization activities; facilitate developing plans for the implementation of RED approaches Policy, respond to inquiries and provide detailed and technical information concerning related practices, procedures, issues, and measures.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: University degree in Medicine and Master's Degree in public health or epidemiology or biostatistics
Desirable: -

Experience

Essential: At least 7 years' experience at the national and international level in EPI (Expanded Programme om Immunization)/Polio eradication related activities.
Desirable: Working experience with NGOs / UN agencies / Ministry of Public Health

Skills

Managerial skill, providing leadership to the staff in the area under his/her responsibility.

Thorough Knowledge of epidemiology.

Demonstrated ability to identify issues, formulate opinions, make conclusions and recommendations.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 74,913 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 2666 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
