The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) formulates and implements the IAEA's nuclear safety and security programme, which encompasses the IAEA's activities to protect people and the environment from radiation exposure, and responds to the needs of its Member States related to nuclear safety and nuclear security.
The Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety develops and maintains standards for radiation protection, radioactive waste safety, and safety in the transport of radioactive material that enable the beneficial uses of radiation to be exploited while ensuring appropriate protection of workers, the public, patients and the environment. It also assists Member States in the implementation of these standards and provides related services. The Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety (NSRW) develops and maintains standards for radiation protection, radioactive waste safety, and safety in the transport of radioactive material that enable the beneficial uses of radiation to be used while ensuring appropriate protection of workers, the public and patients. It also assists Member States in the implementation of these standards and provides related services.
The Waste and Environmental Safety Section is responsible for the delineation of a global waste safety framework based upon the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management, and the development and application of safety standards for the management of radioactive waste, decommissioning, remediation and environmental releases. The Decommissioning and Remediation Unit of the Waste and Environmental Safety Section is concerned with the establishment and application of safety standards related to the remediation of contaminated environments, the decommissioning of facilities using radioactive material (e.g. nuclear power plants, research reactors, fuel cycle facilities) and the management of naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) waste, in particular the residues and wastes from the mining and milling of uranium ores. The Unit provides leadership for services to operators, regulators and other specialized users involved in assuring safety in the decommissioning of facilities using radioactive material, the release and re-use of sites, the clearance of material and in assessing and advising on the safety of mine/mill tailings.
The Waste Safety Specialist (Remediation) reports to the Unit Head, contributes specialized technical knowledge to the planning and implementation of the unit’s work programme related to remediation. The Waste Safety Specialist (Remediation) will oversee specific activities of the DRU in relation to the development and application of safety standards for remediation. The Waste Safety Specialist (Remediation) provides expertise regarding technical, regulatory or other aspects of remediation activities. The Waste Safety Specialist (Remediation) will participate in activities of the Technical Cooperation Programme on behalf of the DRU, and other activities such as the development of specialist publications.
The Waste Safety Specialist is\: (1) an expert, coordinating and implementing activities related to the safe remediation of contaminated sites and facilities, management and disposition of contaminated residues and waste. Such activities include developing international safety standards and guidance material, acting as a technical specialist and team leader, participating in or leading international advisory and appraisal missions related to radiological and safety assessments, and serving as a coordinator for the preparation of specialist documents; and (2) an analyst, maintaining an overview of the status of the safety of radioactive residues and waste in Member States and working collaboratively with experts in Member States on special projects related to new developments or implementation of safety standards in the field.
Functions / Key Results Expected
• Facilitate the development of international safety standards and other IAEA publications on remediation of contaminated sites to form a basis for international activities in this area.
• Provide technical support for the application of international safety standards through IAEA Technical Cooperation Programme, in close coordination with the responsible programme management officers in the Department of Technical Cooperation.
• Plan and coordinate international projects related to remediation with a view to fostering the exchange of information and developing consensus on constructive actions that can be taken at the international level to improve the level of safety in affected Member States.
• Provide support to Member States through transfer of technical knowledge that contributes to safe remediation of contaminated sites.
• Lead international advisory and verification missions concerned with the safety of remediation, in particular for uranium production and NORM industries.
• Contribute to the capacity building activities in the Member States by developing training materials and organizing training events.
• Communicate IAEA activities in the field of remediation to a wider audience, including other Member States and international organizations, through the preparation of papers, articles and documents for publication .

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills
- Master's Degree - Advanced University degree in Nuclear or physical sciences, engineering or other related field.
- Minimum of seven years of relevant experience in the field of environmental remediation (regulatory, industrial or both). Experience in managing projects related to environmental remediation at the national and/or international level would be an asset.
- Experience in mine site remediation is an asset.
- Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $74913 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 35359, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance
