This position is located within the Ceaserfire Project Team (CPT), Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen (OSESGY). The incumbent will report directly to the  Senior Military Advisor and Lead of the CPT.

Functional Responsibilities

  • Supports Senior Military Advisor in facilitating  security and military discussions between the Yemeni parties on any immediate ceasefire requirement as well as on longer-term security arrangements as part of a final agreement in Yemen;

  • Facilitates and manages the day-to-day running of any ceasefire mechanism bodies resulting from negotiations between the parties in Yemen; 

  • Facilitates day-to-day running of the CPT including coordination of internal and external meetings;

  • Supports Senior Military Advisor in strengthening respect for the cessation of hostilities and supports to liaise with senior Yemeni and KSA-led Coalition military commanders; 

  • Supports Senior Military Advisor to inform  relevant parties in Yemen and the region of the preparations and progress of the Ceasefire;

  • Serves as the Special Assistant to the Senior Military Advisor, supporting in the management of the ceasefire mechanism, the CPT, and brings to the attention of the Senior Military Advisor all matters requiring its personal attention, assists in formulating options as to how those matters might be handled, and ensures appropriate follow-up, as directed. Organizes and manages conferences, meetings, seminars and workshops as directed by the Senior Military Advisor.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education - Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in security studies, international relations, business administration/management or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.  

Work Experience: * A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the area of security sector reform (SSR), military operations, peacekeeping, or related area.
* Experience in the coordination, management and implementation of ceaesfires is desirable.
* Experience providing security sector-related technical support to peace operations is desirable.
*  Experience in support to mediation/negotiation on security arrangements is desirable.


Languages - English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat.
For the position advertised, English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is an advantage.
