Organizational Setting

The main aim of the FAO country offices, which are headed by an FAO Representative, is to assist governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition, to help develop the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors, and to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner.

Reporting Lines

The Communication consultant is working under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in Jordan, direct supervision of Administration Officer in the FAO Representation in Jordan and in close collaboration with the communication focal points of the Regional Office for Near East and North Africa and Office of Communications (OCC) and the programme team of FAO Jordan.

Technical Focus

The Communication Consultant will provide communication support to enhance visibility of FAO’s Programmes in Jordan. In regular consultation and coordination with the communication focal points of the Regional Office for Near East and North Africa and Office of Communications (OCC), the incumbent will ensure the development and implementation of the FAO Jordan communication strategy and outreach initiatives in Jordan. His/her support shall ensure an effective presence in the media of the FAO Jordan as a dynamic and renewed organization that works to strengthen food security and to promote agriculture, fisheries, livestock and the sustainable management of natural resources to the benefit of communities and rural people in need.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Develop, manage, and implement communication strategy and action plan for FAO Jordan programme in alignment with the regional communication strategy and corporate communication policy.
  • Work closely with FAO country office’s team and the Regional Communication Office, on the organization’s local, regional and international days/events/ campaigns
  • Liaise with FAO regional office to maintain high visibility of FAO Jordan office on FAO social media and communications platforms
  • Develop communications and public information materials for the FAO activities in Jordan such as success stories, fact sheets, pamphlets, brochures, press releases, website content, and multimedia products in both English and Arabic languages.
  • Prepare and support the drafting, editing, ad formulation of diverse materials (background material, speaking points, briefings, speeches, Op-eds, questions and answers) for use in FAO events for FAOR and programme team, set quality and production standards for information dissemination in multiple languages.
  • Work with graphic designers, photographers, multimedia companies and printers to obtain materials in accordance with the organization’s specifications.
  • Maintain and update the page/official website of the Representation and other media platforms.
  • Share on monthly basis information, schedule of meeting and important planned events
  • Build and nurture effective and close partnership with local media representatives and media outlets in Jordan and create a pool of reliable media representatives to ensure complete coverage of the activities of the organization.
  • Organize press conferences, media briefings, and interviews with technical and project officers.
  • Track media coverage of FAO activities in Jordan.
  • Support the dissemination of the Regional Office for Near East and North Africa (RNE) and HQ press releases and Op-Ed’s to local media outlets, in coordination with the Regional Communication Office.
  • Manage and update the communication content of social media channels such as twitter account on a regular basis.
  • Coordinate the implementation of FAO’s global campaigns in Jordan including World Food Day, and International Fruit Years, Days and UN decades led by FAO.
  • Conceptualize, write, edit, prepare and develop high-profile communication, promotional, outreach and advocacy materials for print/electronic/audio-visual media and prepare and disseminate press releases and articles.

  • Build and maintain professional relations with local media representatives in Jordan and cultivate opportunities and contribute to the establishment of partnerships with national institutions including private sector and influential persons as well as with UN agencies.
  • Manage media relations responding to enquiries, developing and managing media outreach plans as required, and ensuring that material can be used by the media and understood by the public.
  • Coordinate, facilitate and oversee the production of FAO-Jordan programme through publication workflow system (PWS) and oversee production of photos, videos and information material about FAO-Jordan Programme activities.
  • Follow up plans for the programme’s contribution in SOMI and support the sub-regional office’s communication needs when requested by the Regional Communication Office.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

  • University degree in development communication, journalism, media, communication research, social science, public relations, policy advocacy, international relations or other related fields.
  • At least 3 years of relevant work experience on communication and advocacy.
  • Working knowledge of English, and Arabic.
  • National of Jordan

  • Prior experience in working with UN agencies and/or international agencies on policy advocacy, strategic communication, partnership building and social mobilization is highly desirable.
