Water Sanitation Engineer

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the Field Engineering Officer / Chief of Unit person the duties of the Water and Sanitation Engineer will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Preparation of water and sanitation projects documents including diagrams, sketches, calculation of requirements, dimensions of pipes and capacities of elements, bill of quantities, specifications and cost analysis and cost estimations.

  • Monitoring on site the installation of new water and sanitation networks and systems and maintenance of existing ones by guiding, instructing and clarifying doubts to contractors, manpower, subcontractors, involved in the implementation.

  • Preparation of monitoring reports and reporting tools of the progress of water and sanitation tasks on sites.

  • Coordinate the above-mentioned tasks with other construction works and other engineers included in the project.

  • Ensure that the works meet the safety and environmental standards in accordance with international codes and regulations and environmental procedures within the mission;

  • Install and carry out scheduled periodic and emergency maintenance services on all the water and sanitation elements including but not limited to: pipework, pumps, water treatment plants, septic tanks, soak pits, water tanks, water installations in kitchens, ablutions, toilets, etc;

  • Carry out scheduled periodic and emergency maintenance services on all the facilities and installations in the camp;

  • Perform surveys of existing status of installations and items and prepare technical reports;

  • Prepare material specifications for the purpose of raising requisitions of materials and ensure that minimum stock levels are maintained at all times;

  • Assist other units such as Operations, Infrastructure, etc. when required; Liaise frequently with the Building Maintenance Unit Supervisor;

  • When working with national staff or (non-)governmental counterparts, including Implementing Partners (IPs), the incumbent is strongly encouraged to set aside dedicated time for capacity development through coaching, mentoring and formal and on-the-job training;

  • Perform other related duties as may be required.

Qualifications/Requirements Required degree level: Master degree or equivalent Education - Additional Comments:

Advanced University Degree (Master's or equivalent) in Water and Sanitation Engineering

An additional 2 years of relevant work experience in combination with a relevant first university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) may substitute for the requirement for a Master’s degree.

Required experience: 36 Months Experience remark:

At least 3 year experience in development and implementation on site of water and sanitation projects.

Language skills:
  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • French(Optional), Level - Fluent

Advanced University Degree (Bachelor degree) in Water and Sanitation Engineering or equivalent

An additional 2 years of relevant work experience in combination with a relevant first university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) may substitute for the requirement for a Master’s degree.

  • Experience in planning and estimation of water and sanitation projects;

  • Very good computer skills especially for drawing of water and sanitation diagram, sketches and;

  • Technological awareness: Experience with MS office software and MS Projects, ability to develop and operate common office management database, engineering and spread sheet applications;

  • Client orientation: Strong negotiating skills and ability to influence others to reach agreement;

  • A valid vehicle driving license;

  • Have affinity with or interest in humanitarian relief, post-conflict situations, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System;

  • Experience in the East and Central Africa Region is desirable.

  • MS Project, AutoCAD, Office package (Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook).
