Coordinator, Health and the Environment (HAE)
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
The Division of Healthy Environments and Populations (DHP) works to support countries to take sustained, systematic and effective action to reduce common risk factors for noncommunicable diseases and conditions (including injuries), address health risks caused by environmental factors, and support WHO stakeholders and countries to address the social and commercial determinants of health, in particular gender and inequity.
Health and the Environment (HAE) - To support Member States in improving health outcomes linked to environmental risks including but not limited to unsafe water and inadequate sanitation, poor air quality (indoor and outdoor), exposure to toxic, hazardous waste and chemicals, and climate change. Emphasis is placed on enabling strengthened collaboration between health and environment sectors. Capacity in countries will be enhanced through regional technical networks of experts and partners, intercountry sharing of good practices, research, policies and action on environmental and occupational hazards to health and strengthening environmental surveillance and information systems. Desired outcomes include strengthened national capacity to undertake environmental health risk assessment and followed by appropriate multisectoral responses (e.g. laws, regulations, policies, plans, and programmes) to increase resilience to climate change and achieve sustainable development goals.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
To serve as Coordinator, Health and the Environment (HAE), with the following specific responsibilities:
(1) to coordinate the planning, implementation and evaluation of all programme activities under environmental health (i.e. water, sanitation and hygiene; air quality management; chemical safety; solid and hazardous waste management; radiation safety; environmental and health impact assessment; climate change; regional forum and national environmental health action planning; and occupational health and safety) with advisers and officers involved in these programme activities. This includes the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the work plans of the Regional Office for environmental health programme activities, and the coordination and support, where appropriate, for the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the work plans of the country offices for environmental health programmes.
(2) to develop, implement and evaluate the Regional Office's programme activities on environmental health, providing advice and information to the Regional Director on programme priorities, the status of implementation, and the associated resource needs, while collaborating with the United Nations Environment Programme Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, to support the development and implementation of the work plans of the regional Thematic Working Groups of the Regional Forum;
(3) to collaborate with WHO country offices, Division of Pacific Technical Support, the WHO Asia-Pacific Centre for Environment and Health in the Western Pacific Region, nongovernmental organizations, international partner agencies, WHO collaborating centres and other organizations to support Member States in developing plans and activities on environmental health in priority countries by assessing country situations and needs, defining priorities for WHO support, developing plans and projects, identifying and mobilizing funds, and implementing and evaluating the plans and projects;
(4) to support regional and country activities in environmental health by:
a. managing the human resource plan in the team, including identifying candidates, and recruiting andsupporting consultants and staff;
b. making recommendations on the selection of supplies and equipment;
c. identifying and assessing fellowship and study tour programmes;
d. organizing and implementing regional and national training courses, workshops and consultations;
e. assessing research proposals and evaluating their outcomes;
f. developing promotional materials;
g. providing technical and administrative advice to WHO country offices, staff and consultants; etc.;
(5) to undertake related duties as required, including, but not limited to:
a. representing WHO and/or the Regional Office for the Western Pacific at technical meetings related tothe areas of environmental health;
b. participating in, and supporting interdivisional and interprogramme coordination and collaborationactivities and within the Regional Office;
c. providing guidance and coordinating collaborative technical work, including submission of reports fromthe team and developing cross-cutting programmes in the team where appropriate;
d. acting for other regional staff members when necessary to facilitate continuity of work within units in theteam;
e. establishing and maintaining good working relations within the Organization, and with international andNational organizations and other institutions as appropriate; and
f. performing other duties as assigned.
Essential: Advanced university degree (master's level or higher) in medical sciences, public health, environmental science, engineering, or another related field from a recognized university.
Desirable: Doctoral degree in a related field.
Essential: Minimum ten years of relevant work experience, at national and international levels, in planning and implementing projects, plans, programmes and applied studies in relation to environmental health including climate change and occupational health.
Desirable: Relevant work experience in developing countries

-Ability to communicate effectively and work harmoniously as a member of a team in an outcome-oriented manner with national and international colleagues of different educational and cultural backgrounds; and

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 89,837 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 3608 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
