Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 22 years old. Applicants must be nationals of or legal residents in the country of assignment.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of WEE Team Lead or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV Gender Officer & Coordinator will:

  • Thoroughly familiarize her/himself with the gender dynamics of South Sudan in order to enable the UN Women office, the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT) and the humanitarian clusters to develop a sound understanding of the prevailing gender situation, and take informed decisions on integrating gender in planning and operations;

  • Provide high-level and technical capacities in planning and coordination to the HCT;

  • Ensure that Gender Equity and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) is integrated into the Humanitarian Programming Cycle (HPC), the Humanitarian Needs Overview (HNO), the Strategic Response Plan (SRP), Flash and Consolidated Appeal processes, and other relevant strategic planning instruments/processes;

  • Engage with clusters and ensure that gender is appropriately integrated system-wide across all the clusters;

  • Mobilize local NGOs and Government authorities to engage in coordination, planning and programming;

  • Engage in discussions with potential partners in the country, including embassies or other inter-governmental organizations, in order to mobilize resources locally and generate interest at more upstream level in funding UN Women activities;

  • Contribute to concept and proposal development in gender, livelihood, and other UN Women thematic areas.

  • Contribute to the gap analysis in the areas of livelihoods, protection and GBV and Humanitarian response in the work location

  • Contribute to the design of capacity building materials and effectively implement the trainings at all levels

  • Manages the day-to-day livelihood activities, including activity finances as per UN Women financial regulations.

  • Prepare weekly and monthly work plans and ensure work plans are implemented as per the approved Annual work plan.

  • Monitor and document UN Women’s livelihood, protection and humanitarian work as directed by the Programme Specialist.

  • Prepare/contribute to weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual, donor and other reports

  • Represent UN Women in state meetings and other stakeholder meetings in the state.

  • Contribute and actively participate in a regular sector meetings within UN Women and at district level

  • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications/Requirements Required degree level: Bachelor degree or equivalent Education - Additional Comments:

A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area, e.g. gender studies, social sciences, agriculture or development studies.

Required experience: 24 Months Experience remark:
  • At least 2-3 years of relevant professional experience in coordination, planning, integration, advocacy for/in gender equality and women’s empowerment; experience in humanitarian settings and with humanitarian clusters required;

  • Extensive technical knowledge regarding gender in humanitarian action, GEWE, GBV, such as humanitarian planning and implementation instruments and processes, would be a strong asset;
Language skills:
  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • Arabic(Mandatory), Level - Working Knowledge
Area of expertise: Gender equality and the advancement of women Area of expertise details:

The incumbent must be a dynamic, multi-functional person, who supports UN Women with professionalism, dedication and client orientation, and who must be willing both to work on programmatic/substantive aspects and to provide operational/logistical services. The following qualifications are required:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area, e.g. gender studies, social sciences, agriculture or development studies.

  • At least 2-3 years of relevant professional experience in coordination, planning, integration, advocacy for/in gender equality and women’s empowerment; experience in humanitarian settings and with humanitarian clusters required;

  • Extensive technical knowledge regarding gender in humanitarian action, GEWE, GBV, such as humanitarian planning and implementation instruments and processes, would be a strong asset;

    experience with training and facilitation (including participatory approaches), project development and management, monitoring and evaluation, human rights-based approaches, capacity development approaches, are all assets;

    Culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members and local authorities;

  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;

  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;

  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;

  • Fluency in spoken and written English knowledge of Arabic is an advantage;

  • valid national driver’s license and proven ability to drive manual gear 4x4 over rough terrain;

    Ability to perform duties under stress and in insecure, isolated and potentially hostile environments;

  • Sound security awareness;

  • Have affinity with or interest in women’s and gender issues, humanitarian action, refugee work, post-conflict or natural disaster situations, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.
