Background

The UNODC Regional Office for Central Asia (UNODC ROCA) frequently requires the services of translators to translate texts from Russian and/or Uzbek to English and from English to Russian language and/or Uzbek as well as to provide simultaneous/consecutive translation during seminars, workshops, conferences and official meetings. UNODC ROCA aims to sign Service Contract with professional translator/interpreter who is able to provide top-quality simultaneous/consecutive interpretation and written translation in a variety of settings. The interpreter/translator is to be located in the ROCA, Tashkent. For simultaneous/consecutive translation the assignment will be carried out either at the site of the event or online through various dedicated platforms (Zoom, MS Teams, etc.). The Interpreter/Translator may also be required to go on official mission outside of Uzbekistan to perform official duties.  

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the guidance and administrative supervision of the UNODC ROCA Programme Management Officer and direct supervision of the Regional Representative, the incumbent will be responsible for the following functions:

  • The Russian/Uzbek to English and English to Russian/Uzbek translation of a variety of materials including reports, speeches, press releases, brochures, formal letters, etc. produced by and for the use of UNODC ROCA. The topics of such documents include countering transnational organized crime, drug trafficking, terrorism, human trafficking, drug and HIV prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, social reintegration, and criminal justice, crime prevention, and anti-corruption
  • Simultaneous/consecutive interpretation during training courses, workshops, conferences, and official meetings organized by UNODC ROCA (English to Russian/Uzbek and vice versa)
  • Editing and proofreading texts (ensuring appropriate style and terminology) of a variety of materials produced by and for the use of UNODC ROCA
  • Translation of incoming/outgoing correspondence from English to Russian/Uzbek and vice versa
  • While providing the interpretation/translation services, the incumbent must pay special attention to UN communication standards, adhere to tone and style of language envisaged by formal diplomatic protocol
  • Perform other duties as may be required.

Required Skills and Experience

The selected candidate will be professional interpreter/translator with demonstrated ability to provide top-quality simultaneous/consecutive interpretation and written translation in a variety of settings; will have the ability for oral interpretation and written translation of law-enforcement, legal,  statistics-related and other UNODC materials within reasonably tight delivery deadlines;  knowledge of and proficiency in commonly used software applications (Word, Excel, Power Point); the ability to work under pressure.

Education:

  • A bachelor degree in interpretation and/or translation, linguistics. Degree/s in the areas of journalism, politics, diplomacy, social sciences, economics, finance, legal areas is an asset

Experience:

  • At least 3 years of experience in translation, interpretation, editing and/or proofreading preferably with international organizations, is required.

Languages:

  • Professional knowledge of English, Russian and Uzbek languages is required. IELTS or TOEFL certification is desired. Accuracy and proof-reading skills.

Others:

  • Ability to speak clearly and maintain good posture. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Client-oriented approach.
  • Ability to operate modern office equipment. Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, as well as Zoom, MS Teams, etc.)
  • Ability to travel outside of Uzbekistan on official missions.
