OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

Within BOS, SHW, in line with the scope of WHO 2020 Output 434H: Safe and secure environment with efficient infrastructure maintenance, cost-effective support services and responsive supply chain including duty of care, develops and implements health policies toprotect and promote staff health and advises management on measures to ensure a safe and healthy work environment at all levels of WHO as well as IARC, ICC, and UNAIDS. SHW provides preventive medical and psychosocial care, first aid and emergency care for staff and acts as medicaladviser on staff insurance and disability matters. SHW also provides medical and psychosocial support to WHE and deployed personnel before, during and after deployment.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

As a nurse in the Staff health and Wellbeing Department, the incumbent must:

1) Ensure the smooth operation of the infirmary:Look after the infirmary and equipment.- Sterilize equipment.Compile and process monthly statistics.- Ensure medical service inventory is kept up to date.

2) Contribute to the medical and paramedical work of the service:

- Provide emergency treatment in close collaboration with premises security and physicians of the medical service.

- Treat persons involved in accidents in the workplace.- Respond appropriately to any person reporting to the medical service (first aid, referral to medical facilities in Geneva or SHW physicians).

- Provide assistance and counselling to staff members in close collaboration with the staff counsellor, the psychologist and SHW physicians.

- Take blood specimens during entry examinations and periodic check-ups and simultaneously check immunization status.

- Pre and post HIV counselling.

- Keep medical records up to date.

- Prepare staff members for mission travel: (I) Verify the opinion of medical fitness.(ii) Administer appropriate vaccinations in accordance with WHO recommendations(iii) Decide on appropriate malaria prophylaxis, referring to a physician where necessary.(iv) Provide guidance to travellers (advice on hygiene and prevention, explain and present the medical kit and mosquito bed net).

- Take telephone calls (telephone queries, make appointments, provide guidance).

- Provide on-call medical services (outside working hours) for meetings involving more than 300 people, upon request.

3) Participate in occupational health and safety promotion activities:

- Organize annual influenza immunization campaigns.- Organize themed campaigns (e.g. World Health Day).

- Carry out workstation reviews (ergonomics) and give appropriate guidance.

- Give first aid training to staff members, including as part of preparations for mission travel.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: Completion of secondary school with a paramedical vocational certification in nursing.
Desirable: A first university degree in nursing. Recognized training in ergonomics and occupational health. First Aid Instructor training

Experience

Essential: A minimum of 8 years of relevant working experience, including at least four years working in a hospital setting, and between two and five years in a medical service specializing in occupational health , travel medicine and/or professional experience in a developing country.
Desirable: Experience in education for health desirable.

Skills

The volume of medical and associated administrative tasks varies according to the number of departures on mission (itself associated with international health imperatives such as epidemics and other emergencies) and recruitments. The need to adhere to deadlines means that the volume andpace of work must be adjusted accordingly. Numerous and varied emergencies also require considerable flexibility and resourcefulness and the ability to redistribute the workload among the nurses. Health promotion activities impose a regular schedule of planning and execution.TRAINING: State nursing diploma. Hospital nurse training.

REMUNERATION

WHO offers staff in the General Services category an attractive remuneration package, which for the above position includes an annual net base salary starting at CHF 82,401 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable) and 30 days of annual leave.
