BACKGROUND The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 26 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.
SCOPE OF WORK The
Central American Minors Volunteer will work within the Resettlement Department
at the IRC Silver Spring, MD Office. The volunteer will serve as the
subject expert on CAM-AOR related matters. S/he will work with office staff,
community members and relevant partners to identify potential CAM-AOR
applicants, explain program
requirements, gather data and documentation; help prepare and submit CAM-AOR
forms.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Meet all “walk in” clients,
perform an intake session in order to establish their eligibility for enrollment
in public benefits and/or provide referrals to outside resources as needed.
- Assist in maintaining databases
related to programs.
- Engage in community mapping to
identify new and existing resources that could benefit the populations we
serve.
- Assist in the coordination of
the weekly rotation schedule.
- Engage in outreaching efforts that
will educate and inform our community about the IRC and services we
provide.
- Assist the Casework Supervisor
and Senior Caseworker in managing clients’ cases and maintaining case
files.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Volunteer will gain US
field-office experience by interacting with and assisting the populations
we serve.
- Volunteer will acquire knowledge
of IRC programs and public benefits available for refugees, asylees and
other during their resettlement period.
- Volunteer will learn reporting
requirements for resettlement agencies and how to capture data to improve
services
- Volunteer will gain exposure to
case work in the resettlement field
