Background Information
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people. Every year, millions of men, women and children are forced to flee their homes to escape conflict and persecution. UNHCR teams are in the field in over 130 countries, using their expertise to protect and care for over 85 million people. 

The Statistics and Demographics Section which is located in UNHCR¿s Global Data Service (GDS) in Copenhagen, develops statistical definitions and standards, oversees the production of global statistics on refugees and other populations of concern to UNHCR. Access to reliable, timely and accurate data is essential to achieve the aims of the Data Transformation Strategy 2020-2025, that is, to position UNHCR as a trusted leader on data and information related to refugees and other populations of concern. The Section develops external products such as the annual Global Trends report, which analyses the changes in forced displacement and statelessness and deepens public understanding of ongoing crises, and the Refugee Population Statistics Database, which enables humanitarian workers, decision-makers, researchers and many more to quickly access data and information on affected populations. The Section ensures that quality and coherent data related to forced displacement is systematically, responsibly and efficiently collected, analysed and presented by UNHCR and its internal and external partners.

The internship is in Copenhagen with the Statistics and Demographics Section of the Global Data Service. The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Senior Coordinator of the Expert Group on Refugee and IDP Statistics (EGRIS) based in Copenhagen and will work in close collaboration with the EGRIS secretariat and the technical support unit in the Statistics and Demographics Section.

Expert Group on Refugee and IDP Statistics (EGRIS) and work on Statelessness Statistics
To improve official statistics on refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs), UNHCR has taken a leading role in the Expert Group on Refugee and IDP Statistics (EGRIS), both as a steering committee member and as the secretariat. The EGRIS secretariat is hosted by the GDS. UNHCR is coordinating the group in close collaboration with the steering committee, consisting of country members and organizations from EGRIS. The EGRIS was mandated by the UN Statistical Commission to develop recommendations on refugee and IDP statistics and guidance on implementation of the recommendations at country level. The work on the recommendations is concluded and the focus of the current phase is to implement the recommendations at national level, working closely with national partners.  The group consists of 45 members from national statistical systems and 25 regional and international organizations. 

Building on the EGRIS experience and aligned with UNHCR¿s commitment to end statelessness by 2024, UNHCR is engaging actively with partners in the statelessness area. Achievement of the above-mentioned commitment will require a wide range of deliverables. Improved data on statelessness has been identified as among these. The Statistics and Demographics Section is currently working closely with identified experts and through an EGRIS-like process to build national partners¿ capacity around statelessness statistics. One key deliverable is the development of International Recommendations on Statelessness Statistics. This work is included under the EGRIS umbrella and expected to be finalized by March 2023. 

Duties and Responsibilities
This internship offers an exciting opportunity to:
- Support the work of EGRIS and the dissemination and implementation of the recommendations on refugee and IDP statistics at country level. 
- Promote ways of improving data collection and statistics on statelessness at country level, including supporting the development of International Recommendations on Statelessness Statistics (IROSS) and work underway in the expert group on statelessness estimation.
- Support UNHCR engagement in the International Data Alliance on Children on the Move (IDAC), and ensure linkages and collaboration with EGRIS. UNHCR is member of the secretariat of IDAC.

Essential Minimum Qualifications and Professional Experience Required
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Be a recent graduate (completed studies within one year) or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization;
- A University degree (BA) in Statistics, Demography, Public Policy, Social Science or any other related field
- Demonstrated interest and understanding of official statistics and operational data, including different data sources (surveys, administrative data and census);
- Demonstrated ability to develop written material (reports, notes from meeting and advocacy material) 
- Previous exposure to data management tools, information sharing platforms and data visualization tools, knowledge of statistical and data programming languages such as STATA, SPSS, R, MySQL or Python is desirable
- Interest in project coordination and facilitation 
- Advanced knowledge of MS Office suite, especially Excel
- Initiative, sound judgment and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with staff members from different national and cultural backgrounds 
- Fluency in English language, knowledge of another UN language is an asset.

The Intern will be expected to engage with and support the following activities:
- Support effective development and implementation of phase 3 of the EGRIS, in collaboration with the EGRIS secretariat and its steering committee
- Support the ongoing work on developing International Recommendations on Statelessness Statistics, and start working on the defined deliverables for 2021
- Support coordination of regular steering committee meetings and support follow up on decisions and actions agreed
- Support coordination between different stakeholders in the projects, including steering committee, technical experts, consultants, and partners
- Support organization of meetings and logistic arrangements, including maintaining invitation lists and letters
- Ensure logistical support for regular meetings of the EGRIS, including subgroups on dissemination/advocacy; capacity building; knowledge sharing/compilers¿ manual and statelessness sub-group and for any workshops on the topic
- Support monitoring and evaluation of EGRIS implementation at country level, and collect lessons learned and best practice examples in a systematic way
- Support UNHCR effective engagement with IDAC, and follow up from meeting of the secretariat and advisory board
- Assist in identifying appropriate further statistical tools and developing appropriate training materials on existing tools
- Develop material for the communication and dissemination of the results and lessons learned, with special emphasis on the use of effective data visualization tools
- Any other tasks, as needed

Location and Conditions
The successful candidate will be based with the Statistics and Demographics Section in the UN City Copenhagen, Denmark and report to the Senior Statistics Coordination Officer (EGRIS).
The internship is for six months and it is a full-time role from Monday to Friday (40 hours per week).
The start date is to be determined in accordance with the measures adopted by the Danish government and guidance of UNHCR regarding the COVID-19 situation, tentatively in June 2021. Depending on the circumstances, there is a possibility the successful candidate will perform certain duties remotely and/or from at home.
Obtaining and renewing current visas and residence permits including all associated costs, are the responsibility of the intern.
Please note that the terms of internship, as defined by UNHCR practice, include the payment of a Food and Local Transportation Allowance (FLTA). In case the intern is sponsored by another source during the internship this will be deducted from the FLTA.
The written test might be included in selection process.
An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.
