Organizational Background

The Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization with its headquarters in Vienna is the international organization setting up the global verification system foreseen under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), which is the treaty banning any nuclear-weapon-test explosion or any other nuclear explosion. The Treaty provides for a global verification regime, including a network of 337 stations worldwide, a communications system, an international data centre and on-site inspections to monitor compliance.

Organizational Setting

This position is located in the Scientific Methods Unit, under the Software Applications Section of the International Data Centre Division. 

Reporting Lines

Under the supervision of the Head, Scientific Methods Unit, Software Applications Section, International Data Centre Division (IDC) to: 

Duties and Responsibilties

  1. Automate the vDEC user data management system that tracks the vDEC agreement implementation;
  2. Set-up a public database of publications and external reports resulting from vDEC Agreements;
  3. Upgrade the configuration of the vDEC platform, the software installed on the platform and setup a mechanism to update vDEC data in accordance with CTBTO policies;
  4. Contribute to the planning for a near-term evolution of the platform;
  5. Provide technical support to vDEC users and manage vDEC user accounts;
  6. Contribute to CTBTO reports and documentation of vDEC implementation; 
  7. Perform other duties as assigned.

Education

  • University degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.

Work Experience

  • Five (5) years of experience in software engineering including hands-on experience in developing and operating an SQL database, as well as experience with the Unix/Linux operating system including running and monitoring real-time data processing applications under Unix/Linux;
  • Two (2) years of experience providing technical support for medium-to-large software systems;
  • Experience with running and configuring CTBTO waveform and radionuclide data processing applications is an asset.

Languages

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential;
  • Knowledge of other CTBTO official languages is desirable.

Duration of contract:

The Consultancy assignment is limited to a period of 130 working days over a period of twelve (12) months.
