UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.

Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.

And we never give up.

For every child, results

As UNICEF, we are strongly committed to putting affected families, children and adolescents at the centre of our work, as reflected in the UNICEF’s Core Commitments for Children in Humanitarian Action, the IASC commitments on Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP), as well as the Grand Bargain “participation revolution” commitment. These are central elements for improving the quality and effectiveness of our humanitarian and development programmes, and ensuring affected populations can fulfil their rights to participate and be heard.

In May 2018, UNICEF Regional and HQ Directors adopted a business case and roadmap to scale up AAP across the organisation. The initiative contributes to the UNICEF Strategic Plan 2018-2021 by supporting humanitarian action to “more systematically focus on community engagement and accountability to affected people”.

The Community Engagement and Accountability Unit in the Office of Emergency Programmes - Geneva, is leading the implementation of the AAP roadmap globally. The Unit ensures a systematic and coherent organization-wide approach to AAP is embedded in existing processes and systems; so that it becomes an integral part of good-quality programming in development and humanitarian situations alike. It supports the application of AAP approaches at the regional and country level and since 2020 co-leads the Risk Communication and Community Engagement pillar of the global response to COVID-19, together with IFRC and WHO trough the Collective Service (RCCE CS).
