How can you make a difference?

Key function, accountabilities, and related duties/tasks

Under the supervision of the Chief, Child Protection (P5) and with a dotted line link to the Chief, Learning and Development section, the consultant will be responsible for editing, fact-checking and some writing for the above-mentioned types of documents and reports and apply following strategies:

  • Restructure and rewrite the areas of text as needed to promote clarity, continuity and internal consistency and incorporate reviewers’ comments.
  • Fact-check the statements for accuracy and completion of references as/when required.
  • In the case of donor reports and proposals, check and ensure text if responding to the objectives in the proposal and report requirements.
  • Shorten overly long sentences. Insert breaks where required to shorten paragraphs that are too long.
  • Redraft incorrect or unclear passages where necessary and insert any omitted text.
  • Provide accuracy and consistency in capitalization, spelling, abbreviations/acronyms, notes, bibliography, titles, graphs, and tables (including their notes and sources), as per the UNICEF Style Guidebook.
  • Ensure that the organization of the work promotes forward momentum and that the language is crisp and engaging;
  • Ensure that arguments are presented in a balanced manner; that citations are included for statement/passages where required.
  • Ensure that the language used is impactful; that repetitious text and jargon are eliminated; and that potential sensitivities (e.g. political, gender, culture) are flagged and ways of resolving the issue(s) proposed; ensure consistency in overall layout.
  • Work closely with the responsible child protection specialists and officers on revisions and changes.

Key deliverables:

  • Timely and high-quality writing, editing and copy editing of:
    • (a) donor reports
    • (b) rapporteuring in workshops and producing workshop reports, other reports, concept notes
    • (c) Human Interest Stories
    • (d) project proposals.
  • Note that the due dates are not yet defined as some of the donor report due dates have not yet been received.
  • The work must be delivered in hard copy and by electronic submission.
  • Indicators are quantitative and qualitative and include the following:
    • 1) timeliness and
    • 2) quality of the submissions in line with the instructions provided.

Payment terms:

The consultant will be paid after completion of up to 10 days’ work accompanied by a detailed report outlining the key deliverables and time spent on each writing assignment.  The quality and timeliness will be reviewed/cleared by the supervisor before any payment is made.

 The responsible Specialists and Officers in the Child Protection and Learning and Development Sections will be responsible for the following:

    1. Develop and maintain a schedule to provide timely and complete draft documents to the consultant;
    2. Be available for review/inputs and closing gaps in data and related information

Review the documents for factual errors and omissions and provide feedback

  1. Technical Competencies
  • Good understanding of child protection in Ethiopia: key developments across the sector, the key partners and context is an asset;
  • Good knowledge of global developments in child protection, education and related sectors, including the application of the equity lens and human rights perspectives to programming is an asset;
  • Good ability to support translation of analytical findings and evidence into a cohesive narrative is essential;
  • Excellent oral and written communication and report writing skills in English is essential. Writing samples may be requested.
  • Excellent communication (written and oral), negotiation, and other human relations skills;
  • Excellent ability to collect, treat and analyze data. Advanced computer literacy expected in Word, Excel and Power Point.
  1. Education
  • An advanced University Degree in development and/or social sciences or related technical field is required.
  1. Experience
    • At least five (5) years of progressively advanced work experience in international development, some of which should be in a developing country context and include child protection and/or education
    • Demonstrated experience in producing documents, proposals and reports for a resource partner, including UN agency is essential.
    • Experience working in the UN system agency or UN organisation is an asset.
    • Experience implementing child protection programmes will be considered an asset.
  2. Language requirements
    • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language or a local language is an asset.
