Internship: Intern with YOUTH ENGAGEMENT TEAM (22 weeks, part time or full time) - DOC, NYHQ (Requisition# 541157)

In the context of UNICEF’s increased investment in the engagement of young people, the Youth Engagement Team is seeking an intern to support the design, implementation and monitoring of strategies, campaigns and initiatives to engage adolescents and youth in advocacy and communication.

Today there are 1.8 billion young people worldwide who make up a quarter of the world’s population. Young people are a massive cohort, with an immense potential to benefit their societies socially, politically and economically. UNICEF has prioritized and invested in engaging young people in recent years and it is a key part of our mandate to provide young people with platforms that empower them and to support them, so they can speak out on the issues that impact their lives.

The Youth Engagement Team in the Division of Communication (DOC) is responsible for strengthening UNICEF's capacity to engage young people as advocates for their rights through our flagship campaigns and initiatives; and ensuring their perspectives and voices are an integral part of our communications and advocacy.

The theory of change governing the work of the Youth Engagement Team is that by investing in young people as active citizens and advocates, we will help young people reach their full potential and deliver on our strategic organizational priorities more effectively and sustainably. Our ambition is that all interested UNICEF offices have the knowledge, skills, and guidance they need to engage young people on priority issues, sustainably and meaningfully, through approaches and platforms appropriate to the local contexts.

In the context of UNICEF’s increased investment in the engagement of young people, the Youth Engagement Team is seeking an intern to support the design, implementation and monitoring of strategies, campaigns and initiatives to engage adolescents and youth in advocacy and communication.

How can you make a difference?

1. Support the conceptualization, implementation and monitoring of youth engagement campaigns and activations linked to key organizational priorities including the Youth Mediathon, mental health month, climate change and COP26, and World Children’s Day.
Deliverables include, but are not limited to:
• participate in brainstorming and planning meetings and contribute ideas for engagement strategies and content,
• develop briefs, concept and other informational materials for UNICEF staff and young people,
• support the monitoring and evaluation of priority initiatives and content and assist in the preparation of reports.

2. Assist in the development of digital content that elevates young people’s voices and actions in support of children’s rights.
Deliverables include, but are not limited to:
• developing social media graphics,
• writing social media copy,
• conducting and writing interviews with youth advocates/activists,
• researching influencers or youth advocates,
• developing ideas for TikTok/Reels.

3. Assist with the community management of the global Voices of Youth platform
Deliverables include, but are not limited to:
• review content submitted to Voices of Youth to ensure it meets engagement and quality guidelines,
• provide feedback to contributors,
• identify top content for promotion.

4. Support the growth of UNICEF’s Global Youth Advocates Programme.
Deliverables include, but are not limited to:
• Tracking countries that are appointing Youth Advocates,
• Preparing the World Children’s Day announcement,
• Supporting the delivery of the Youth Advocates Mobilization Lab,
• Supporting the briefing and preparation of Youth Advocates for advocacy opportunities

To qualify as a champion for every child you will…

• Be enrolled in an undergraduate university degree or higher – or recent graduate - in journalism, communication, marketing, or a similar relevant field. Applicants who have graduated within the past two years are considered recent graduates.
• You are at least 18 years old.
• Have excellent writing and research skills.
• Have strong planning and time management skills.
• Experience with community moderation, and content development for social media platforms, in particular Instagram & TikTok, is an asset.
• Experience in working with young people is an asset.
• Good understanding of world affairs, current events and development issues is an asset.
• Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an asset.

DUTY STATION: UNICEF NYHQ or Remote based (must be able to work NY hours)
