Position Level: Supervisor/Manager

Department: Under the General/Executive Director Office

Position Status: Temporary (until Dec 2023)

Activity Rate: 100%

Location:  Any country where MSF is present.

Status: Must be legally entitled to work in the country where a contract would be issued

Salary Grade: Senior Manager level. The final salary will depend on the incumbent’s location and relevant MSF salary grid.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Demonstrable understanding of the body of evidence relating to climate change and environmental degradation and their impact on health
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing operational and/or advocacy strategies and projects (e.g. the development of reports, materials and toolkits)
  • Demonstrated experience building and managing successful relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated project management skills and experience, including budgetary control, financial planning and data analysis
  • Excellent prioritization and time-management skills
  • Strong writing and presentation skills, both for general public audience and specialist audiences                                      

E   Education, Certifications and Languages

  • Fluency in written and spoken English is essential
  • Fluency in written and spoken French a strong asset
  • Spanish and other languages an asset

Key Responsibilities

·     Provide transformative leadership to the Climate Smart MSF Phase 3 2.6-year program of activities, supporting the team to achieve its objectives and deliverables

·     Support MSF to operationalize its commitments to reduce its negative environmental impact by advancing the work of the Climate Smart MSF team

·     Provide strategic management capacity to all Phase 3 activities such that after 2.6 years, Phase 3’s deliverables have been realized and Climate Smart practices have become business-as-usual within MSF

·     Support Phase 3 staff and consultants to explore and present a proposal for a Climate Smart Fund

  • Represent the Climate Smart MSF program in public and internally
  • Inspire and contribute to cultural change and the advancement of policy and practice inside of MSF to make the organization more responsive and responsible 

Job-Specific Responsibilities

 Project Management of Climate Smart MSF Phase 3

·       Develop the processes and infrastructure necessary to work towards and reach the deliverables of Climate Smart MSF Phase 3

  • Oversee the development, planning and implementation of activities under four work streams: Adaptation, Mitigation, Governance and Systems and Research, and Outreach
  • Initiate collaborations and maintain relationships with a diversity of MSF stakeholders, including operational centers and partner sections
  •  Deliver on activities in accordance with approved the Phase 3 business case 

Strategic oversight

·       Ensure appropriate reporting responsibilities for the project are fulfilled

·       Maintain a global vision of and coordinate activity across multiple complex initiatives and collaborations

·       Ensure responsible use of resources, including accountability for budget, contracts and suppliers, recommending new strategies or drafting proposals in anticipation of future needs  

·       Develop key performance indicators to measure organizational improvements in delivering on climate action activities, including Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) indicators

  • Lead, inspire and motivate others, and foster a work environment founded on our core values of humanity, integrity and results 
  •   Maintain a global vision of a coordinated activity across multiple complex initiatives and collaborations keeping the Steering and Operations Committee updated to ensure program success.

 Collaboration and communication

  • Act as a liaison and representative of Climate Smart MSF in various fora, internal and external, as necessary
  • Collaborate on the coordination of briefs, strategic messaging and so on for MSF’s participation in international fora
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with diverse internal stakeholders
  • Create and nurture connections with external entities, identify areas of synergy and opportunity, and initiate valuable joint projects
  • Actively maintain a good overview of climate actions across the MSF movement and help coordinate and facilitate these actions by connecting people to resources, to information and to each other

 People management (line and functional)

·       Oversee the team-building process, from hiring and onboarding to ongoing team management

·       Create a positive team environment supportive of high performance and collaboration; establish and maintain a dynamic of trust, mutual respect, recognition and accountability

·       Manage, support, and motivate members of the Climate Smart MSF team to achieve the deliverables and meet the objectives, goals and targets outlined in the Climate Smart MSF Phase 3 Business Case

·       Manage performance and ensure staff training and development needs are met, with a view to achieving optimal team productivity and job satisfaction

Programmatic activities

  • Lead on and present a feasibility analysis of a Climate Smart Fund/alternative financing mechanism and governance structure
  • Co-create a climate change advocacy strategy (with broad input) to expand public engagement on the health impacts of climate change on the populations whom MSF serves

 Risk management

  • Understand the legal, financial, reputational and duty of care risks to MSF in light of climate change and environmental degradation impact on health and on MSF operations, manage mitigation where possible and recommend action for gaps identified
  •  Recognize and support on the mental health impacts of climate change and liaise with existing support services and expertise
