Greenpeace Africa was founded in 2008 and is a part of the larger Global Greenpeace Family that was founded in 1971 and works in over 50 countries as well as a coordinating body,Greenpeace International based in Amsterdam. Greenpeace Africa currently has license to work in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Cameroun, Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa. Our work in Africa currently focuses on addressing climate emergency and protecting bio-diversity, through broad campaigns promoting sustainable fishing in the oceans, protecting forests and forest peoples’ rights, ending fossil fuel and nuclear based power, promoting renewable energy and sustainable agriculture.

Greenpeace Africa is seeking a dynamic, seasoned, and highly skilled senior executive to carry out the challenging and exciting position of Executive Director and invites you to consider this position! Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, Greenpeace Africa seeks to appoint an

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The Executive Director (ED) will provide effective leadership and management of the on-going operations of Greenpeace Africa (GPAf), working collegially and effectively with a Senior Management Team in the development and delivery of strategic plans in several geographic regions of Africa, appropriate and effective fundraising, and clear organizational and staff development. The ED will place high priority on motivating staff and achieving clear victories for the planet. The ED will contribute to and work in accordance with Greenpeace’s Global Framework, Global Programme and Bi-lateral Agreements. The ED is appointed by and accountable to the Greenpeace Africa Board of Directors.

Key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

● Strategic Direction: Develop priorities for/of regional geographic areas of GPAf, with approval of the GPAf Board of Directors and taking into account alignment with the Greenpeace global programme and geo-prioritisation. Ensure the effective implementation by the appropriate staff of the plans, strategies and processes within each region.
● Development of an effective management structure for GPAf regionally and continentally.
● Accountability: Ensure implementation of effective shared standards, policies and accountability systems; ensure GPAfrica’s organizational integrity and effectiveness remaining strong, transparent, and aligned with the strategic direction of the organization; and to ensure the protection of the Greenpeace brand.
● Monitoring: Ensure monitoring of the GP presence and activities regionally and continentally, in order to effectively evaluate and adapt GPAfrica’s strategic direction.
● Resource Planning: Ensure the prioritization and effective support of people, infrastructure and financial means, in order to enable optimal operations of GPAf.
● Public Representation: Assume a public role in conveying GPAfrica’s commitment to its mission and goals, and in ensuring transparency and accountability to its supporters and the broader public.
● Diversity: Encourage and support diversity and decentralization of leadership, inspiring and expanding GPAfrica’s appeal to its supporters and activists across the continent, and engaging with strategic allies to reach our goals.

The Executive Director must meet the following criteria:

● A Master’s degree in social science, sustainable development, environmental issues or other relevant discipline from a recognized university or equivalent institution.
● Strong management skills, developed from Executive experience of other organizations, with demonstrable evidence of results.
● Solid experience in leading and implementing transformational organisational change;
● The incumbent must have led a organisation with strong programme management experience
● Knowledge, skills and experience in gender, networking with INGOs and fundraising
● Knowledge of African issues including understanding of African continental and regional institutions and well as the European Union (EU);
● A track record of leadership that motivates,empowering and is inclusive;
● Familiarity and understanding of diverse African cultures and contexts and track record of leadership in different African cultures
● Exceptional people management skills and the ability to positively influence staff morale
● Demonstrable understanding of environmental issues and of the interfaces between environment, development, economic and social justice. (Experience in environment is not essential, but would look at gender experience)
● Excellent command of English; Fluency in French would be an additional advantage.
