CHAI’s global malaria program provides direct technical and operational support to countries around the globe to strengthen their malaria programs and reduce the burden of this preventable, treatable disease. We support governments to scale up effective interventions for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance, with the goals of sustainably reducing the number of malaria-related illnesses and deaths worldwide in the short-term and accelerating progress towards malaria elimination in the long term.


Summary of Position:


CHAI is seeking a highly motivated and mission-driven individual to help develop, execute and coordinate more effective anti-malaria programs in countries in the Southern Africa region, including Angola, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa.


The candidate must have excellent communications skills, patience, and cultural sensitivity, as they will be working on complex topics with a diverse set of global, regional and country partners. The Senior Regional Manager will have significant opportunity to shape CHAI’s approach to supporting malaria programs across a set of country programs. They will have strong quantitative analysis skills and exceptional ability to communicate the implications of analyses clearly and concisely. They will work with CHAI's country and technical teams to devise evidence-based strategic plans, manage communications across countries, regions, and teams, organize CHAI’s work, and provide effective management support to execute high-impact programs.


The position requires a highly motivated, independent individual with outstanding analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills. The successful candidate does not need to have prior expertise in malaria, but they must have the capacity to rapidly absorb new concepts, draw insights and be comfortable communicating these to a technical audience. They must exhibit a passion for results, a commitment to excellence, a willingness to provide support to different tasks, and the capacity to facilitate high-level strategic discussions with a multi-cultural, multidisciplinary set of actors. A strong willingness to travel is a must since the candidate is expected to support countries across the Southern Africa region with travel estimated to be ~40-60%. This position reports to CHAI’s Associate Director for Africa Malaria Programs.

  • Coordinate CHAI’s support to national malaria programs in Southern Africa to help strengthen systems and achieve audacious goals on aggressive timelines
  • Develop management capacity and malaria expertise of CHAI country and regional staff to augment support to national malaria programs
  • Support CHAI staff to think critically to identify national malaria program and health systems gaps and leverage the use of epidemiological evidence to guide-decision making regarding CHAI’s malaria elimination support
  • Coordinate support from CHAI’s Malaria Analytics and Surveillance, Case Management Support, and Financing Teams, as required, to enhance national country-level support, ensure technical soundness of strategies, and achieve program progress
  • Work collaboratively with CHAI country teams and provide thought partnership, strategic guidance, and back-stopping support to country program managers and staff across the region.
  • Support all CHAI malaria staff in the region to develop annual work plans and assist country teams to manage effective implementation of planned activities, including adherence to timelines and coordinating review and feedback from technical teams
  • Monitor program activities against project goals and donor commitments, identify operational bottlenecks or weaknesses, and work with country and CHAI leadership teams to strengthen programs as necessary
  • Ensure the quality of products and documents produced by CHAI team members, including strategic plans, guidelines and standard operating procedures, presentations, project reports and implementation updates, and/or communications with partners
  • Streamline communications between Global Malaria leadership and technical staff and country offices, and provide regular updates on opportunities and progress to each
  • Facilitate coordination of activities between country teams within the region and act as liaison for learning from other regions
  • Synthesize CHAI’s best practices, products, and approaches and work to institutionalize knowledge to maintain consistency of CHAI support across countries and regions
  • Lead donor reporting for region, working alongside country teams to develop programmatic and financial updates
  • Represent CHAI at regional meetings and conferences and develop and maintain relationships with regional partners to ensure coordinated activities
  • Support budgeting process, including working with country teams to determine annual allocations and identify under- or over-spends, and liaising with technical experts during the costing and reforecasting of budgets
  • Identify opportunities to engage and collaborate with regional and local experts, institutions and partners to facilitate long-term sustainability of CHAI’s work
  • Explore new opportunities, engage with country offices during development of funding proposals to ensure joint ownership and sufficient program capacity for execution of funded projects
  • Direct line management of a 3-person team providing strategic guidance and mentorship to achieve team goals
  • Manage CHAI's country operations in Angola and Namibia, including direct oversight of the country budget and human resources, and coordinating with CHAI headquarters to ensure streamlined local operations
  • Other responsibilities as needed
  • Master's Degree in Public Health, Business Administration or related field strongly preferred; or Bachelor’s degree minimum with exceptional experience
  • Minimum of 7 years of work experience with increasing levels of responsibility and leadership
  • Exceptional problem-solving solving skills and analytical capabilities
  • Experience in strategy development, planning, and project implementation
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly, connect the dots and act upon technical information and translate scientific knowledge into actionable insights for decision-making
  • Experience in capacity building, mentorship and management of remote or decentralized teams
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with strong spoken and written English, and skill in making persuasive presentations and written reports
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Experience working and communicating with government officials and multilateral organizations
  • High levels of proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Ability to work independently in unstructured settings and to adapt to new environments and challenges
  • Ability to effectively scope problems, anticipate and pre-empt emerging issues, and make decisions with conviction even in highly ambiguous contexts
  • Willingness to travel ~40-60%


  • Knowledge of malaria, disease elimination or other global infectious disease priorities
  • Experience working in management consulting, investment banking, or similar fast-paced, output-oriented environments
  • Fluency in Portuguese
  • Previous experience working in Sub-Saharan Africa
