Introduction

Are you a self-motivated engineer or applied physicist with experience in safety of large scientific installations, including aspects related to fire safety, electrical distribution (high current and/or high voltage), radiation, cryogenics, and massive equipment? The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector is one of the most complex and successful pieces of scientific apparatus ever built. It employs many innovative and custom-built technologies, as well as a supporting local infrastructure on an industrial scale, including a cryogenic (liquid helium) cooling plant, superconducting magnet, non-conventional cooling plants (fluorocarbon and bi-phase CO2), electrical distribution and detector-gas distribution. Many dedicated systems and procedures are in place to ensure the safety of personnel involved in operating, maintaining and modifying the apparatus. Complementary to personnel safety are the needs to protect the environment and also the very large investment in complex, costly and mostly-irreplaceable equipment. You will join the EP-CMX group, and work in close collaboration with the CMS Technical Coordination team in the role of Safety Officer (LEXGLIMOS), to ensure the safe and efficient maintenance, operation and upgrade of CMS, through the crucial period of the third running period of LHC and subsequent long shutdown. Functions

You will join the Experimental Physics Department, CMS Experiment System Group, Safety, Coordination and Infrastructure Section (EP-CMX-SCI), which is responsible for ensuring coherent design, integration and safe operation of detector components and infrastructure of CMS. You will be the CMS LEXGLIMOS, where your main activities will include:

• Lead the CMS Safety Team, working closely with the CMS Technical Coordination team, with a view to the implementation of the CERN safety objectives in CMS and the definition of the associated priorities and time scales.
• Keep themself and the CMS Technical Coordinator informed regarding all aspects of safety.
• Assess the means necessary for all persons participating in CMS and present on the CERN site to fulfil their obligations in matters of safety, including training and information, propose appropriate measures to the CMS Technical Coordinator and monitor their implementation.
• Organize, coordinate and document the operation, maintenance and upgrade of the safety systems, notably those that ensure the safety of personnel and the protection of the environment.
• Design, organize and document safety training courses in both official languages of the Organization.
• Ensure the conformity of personal protective equipment (PPE) belonging to CMS collaborators.
• Be responsible for the CMS safety documentation, including risk analysis and assessment.
• Perform accident investigation and its follow-up, and organizing emergency preparedness in collaboration with the CERN Fire Brigade, Medical Service, Health, Safety and Environment unit (HSE) and CERN safety officers.
• Work in close collaboration with the CMS Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), to address all radiation-related aspects in CMS maintenance and upgrade projects.
• Upon request from the Departmental Safety Officer, undertake actions regarding general safety matters at the EP Department level.
• Liaise with the Safety Correspondents of the Collaborating Institutions participating in CMS, as required.

Qualifications

Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of occupational health and safety or a related field.

Experience:

• Oxygen deficiency and smoke hazards and protection, including fire behaviour and combustion science.
• Proven experience in risk assessment and the successful application of safety requirements in large scale installations and/or maintenance activities.
• Demonstrated experience in radiation and cryogenic safety.
• Experience in writing safety documentation.
• Initial experience in leading a small team to perform safety-related activities.

Technical competencies:

• Knowledge of Radiation Safety, non-ionizing and ionizing radiation hazards and protection, and personal dosimetry.
• Occupational safety and risk management, including hazard identification and analysis, risk assessment and definition of compensatory measures.
• Safety conformity assessment, including personal protective equipment, machinery etc.; testing, surveillance, inspection, auditing, certification, registration, accreditation.
• Environmental protection, knowledge of safety and environment regulations of the EU and/or of the CERN host states.

Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak the other language in professional contexts. Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages.

Employment Conditions

Contract type: Limited duration contract (5 years). Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position.

These functions require:

• Residence in the immediate vicinity of the Organization's installations.
• Interventions in underground installations.
• A valid driving licence is required.
• Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.
• Shift work, when required by the needs of the Organization.
• Stand-by duty, when required by the needs of the Organization.
