The Digital Strategy Section (DSS) within the Division of Communication comprises Web Editorial, Social Media News and Campaigns, Digital Governance and Platforms teams working together to create compelling public-facing content and to provide digital services within the organization. Through multiple platforms and in multiple languages, DDS draws attention to the many facets of UNICEF’s work, encouraging public support, participation and action, as well as ensuring greater transparency and accountability. DDS is also responsible for the build, management and maintenance of global website properties, as well as providing support to Country and Regional (field) Offices to maximize their use of global web platforms in their communications activities. This role is instrumental in ensuring our large and globally distributed user base has access to web platforms and is supported to use these platforms to publish high quality content that is critical to their communications work. The unicef.org platform stands for the web ecosystem of public-facing, communication websites, built on the common underlying infrastructure and powered by the Drupal Content Management System (CMS), with the main function to enable authoring, publishing and delivering content to UNICEF targeted audiences. The responsibility of the technical product assistant, under the guidance of the Platform Delivery Lead/Product Manager, is to provide support in management of the platform’s technical and functional aspects, platform integration with the 3rd party services, technical and functional management of the tools and services monitoring health and quality of the platform.

Web stories, blog posts, photo essays, Facebook posts, Twitter campaigns, and videos for distribution via UNICEF.org, UNICEF Connect, YouTube, news media and other outlets and platforms are all a part of our digital storytelling.

  • Drupal CMS platform regularly tested; functional documentation updated.

 Description of the assignment

 The product technical assistant will perform the following activities:

  • Lead in providing level 3 support by troubleshooting functional and content related Drupal CMS issues;
  • Assist a Product Manager in drafting, grooming, and validating stories and bugs;
  • Provide testing support in user acceptance and quality assurance processes;
  • Support the process of migration of the legacy CMS pages to new global Drupal platform;
  • Assist in documenting functional aspects of the Drupal platform;
  • Act as a technical manager of the 3rd party tools and services in place to support platform’s quality standards;
  • Assist in testing and validating 3rd party service integration with the unicef.org platform following the UNICEF standards on accessibility, usability, browser support, security, privacy and performance;
  • Perform front-end development, which may include, but is not limited to, development in: HTML, JavaScript, jQuery, CSS, and media queries;
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

A professional and educational background related to digital product management and project management including:

  • Bachelors or Engineering Degree in Computer Science, digital communications and/or other closely related area.
  • At least two years of professional experience in digital product and/or project management.
  • At least two years of professional experience in technical management and support of the enterprise level content management systems.

Extensive knowledge and experience in the domain of web and Drupal CMS is proffered and highly regarded, including:

  • Expert knowledge of the Drupal CMS architecture and functionality.
  • Demonstrated technical understanding in one or more of the following areas: agile project management, scrum methodology, application lifecycle management, and web application operations.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of HTML/CSS and JavaScript is a plus.

The ability to work in a global, international environment, including:

  • Possess strong organizational and detail-oriented skills;
  • Proven ability to deliver under tight deadlines;
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team;
  • Work experience in a non-profit organization is a plus;
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN official language a plus.

With the exception of the US Citizens, G4 Visa and Green Card holders, should the selected candidate and his/her household members reside in the United States under a different visa, the consultant and his/her household members are required to change their visa status to G4, and the consultant’s household members (spouse) will require an Employment Authorization Card (EAD) to be able to work, even if he/she was authorized to work under the visa held prior to switching to G4. At the time the contract is awarded, the selected candidate must have in place current health insurance coverage.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.
