BACKGROUND

Within the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Gavi’s new 2021-2025 strategy (‘Gavi 5.0’) will entail critical shifts of the Alliance’s goals with equity and sustainability becoming the core focus of all support, with enhancements of its operating model to better support countries going forward and maintaining, restoring and strengthening immunisation systems in the context of COVID-19 .

The Strategy Team leads the development and operationalisation of Gavi 5.0 Strategy. This includes, for instance:
•    Developing a strategy for Gavi’s approach to financial management to ensure a higher share of funds are channelled through governments rather than Alliance Partners and to build financial management capacity in countries;
•    Developing investment cases for Gavi’s engagement with strategically important countries, such as India;
•    Supporting and coordinating various workstreams across Gavi aimed at reaching zero-dose children across Gavi supported countries;
•    Designing a new model for portfolio management, introducing a simpler and more differentiated approach that is fit-for-purpose to deliver on Gavi’s priorities;
•    Working with the Alliance leadership and Gavi country teams to identify immunisation bottlenecks and develop specific country investment approaches to deliver on the Alliance’s strategic goals;
•    Coordinating various Gavi 5.0 operationalisation workstreams together with the Deputy CEO; and
•    Supporting Gavi’s performance management process to ensure it is fit-for-purpose.
Guided by a Manager, Strategy, the intern will support a subset of these initiatives by providing the analytical basis and generate key content elements. The intern will be an integral part of the project team with members across Gavi to develop an evidence base to inform Gavi’s management and will support the development of options and recommendations for the CEO’s and Board’s considerations, and support moving approaches into implementation.

As examples, the initiatives that the intern will support will tackle the following questions:

•    How will COVAX 2022 strategy influence Gavi 5.0 strategy and implementation, including possible questions around expanding Gavi remit in areas of global health security and adult immunization platforms?

•    How can Gavi streamline its approach to COVAX delivery funding while achieving maximum maximum programmatic impact and managing fiduciary risk?
•    What should be Gavi’s performance management approach to ensure smooth operationalisation of the new COVAX delivery funding and provide transparency on corporate and team level performance?
•    What are the impactful and innovative investments that the Alliance should support to accelerate COVAX distribution and broader immunization infrastructure, and how can we create the enabling environment in country to identify needs and scale them up?
•    How can Gavi evolve its partnership model to enhance transparency, performance and accountability of its partners?

Note: The essential functions listed in this section are not exhaustive of the job responsibilities; other duties may be assigned consistently with the department needs.
