BACKGROUND:
Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict.  The IRC in Wichita resettles approximately 300 newly-arrived refugees per year and provides numerous program services to assist the refugee from their arrival through citizenship.  

SCOPE OF WORK: The Cultural Orientation program provides instruction to newly arrived refugees on a variety of important topics, such as US laws, financial literacy, public transportation, personal safety, housing issues, employment, immigration, cultural adjustment, and the US healthcare system. Cultural Orientation is offered in a classroom or in-home setting and follows an interactive, participant-centered curriculum. All sessions are conducted in participants’ native languages through the use of in-person interpreters.

Responsibilities:
Facilitate small to large group instruction using provided Cultural Orientation curriculum.
Update the Cultural Orientation curriculum and develop differentiated lessons for clients with varying experiences and educational backgrounds.
Work with interpreters to effectively deliver instructional content to multilingual students.
Assist with program logistics, such as setting up the classroom, preparing materials, contacting participants, maintaining records, and administering assessments.
Assist in orienting newly arrived refugees to their neighborhoods through classes and field trips (libraries, parks, clothing stores, grocery stores, and other community services).
Assist in teaching refugees how to navigate Wichita Transit.
Provide follow-up for individuals needing more assistance after Cultural Orientation class.
Help develop new resources to introduce newly arrived refugees to U.S. customs, laws and culture.

Learning Objectives:
Intern will gain experience with teaching, curriculum development, program administration, and assessment.
Intern will build public speaking skills, learn to work with an interpreter, and increase inter-cultural competence.
Intern will learn about the US refugee resettlement process and educational methods that promote community integration and self-sufficiency.
