OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The mission of WHO's UHC/Healthier Populations Division is to contribute to reducing health inequalities and reducing preventable disease and injury caused by environmental, social and economic determinants of health. This is achieved through a coordinated inter-sectoral approach aimed at enabling all people to enjoy better health and well-being, in line with the Organization's 13th General Programme of Work (GPW13) and the Sustainable Development Goals. The office of the Assistant Director-General (ADG) coordinates, guides and oversees the programmatic and administrative cohesion of the departments of the Division, ensuring optimum delivery of services and output in line with Governing Body resolutions, including the General Programme of Work and the Programme Budget, and within the available resources. The office also aims at achieving synergies between individual programmes and their implementations, in compliance with the regulatory framework of the Organization The One Health Initiative leads on theprevention of emerging zoonoses and on the development of a WHO wide One Health approach. In particular it provides the Secretariat for the High-Level Expert Panel on one health and emerging zoonoses; provides the Secretariat of the WHO Internal Coordination (WIC) Network on One Health; provides support to the One Health collaboration between FAO/OIE/UNEP/WHO (expanded tripartite); promotes the One Health related research agenda; contribute to the response to emerging zoonoses outbreaks strengthens cross sectoral solutions and translate these into countries capacities and support.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Plan and implement advocacy and education/trainings on One Health:

a. With key stakeholders, develop relevant information and advocacy materials in languages and formats easily used by national stakeholders and the public.

b. Ensure that technical material produced complies with One Health principles and practice.

c. Produce One Health products such as public information; brochures, leaflets and posters; radio and TV scripts; guides for stakeholders and ensure their translation into local language and their adaptation for the local context.

d. Report regularly on One Health activities and issues, with RO and HQ counterparts.

e. Map preferred channels of communication at country level with focus on targeted and vulnerable groups.

f. Provide support to surge capacity personnel that may be deployed as part of country support activities.

g. Support national authorities to conduct lessons learnt exercises to further strengthen prevention of emerging zoonoses.

h. Perform any other related duties, as required by the supervisors.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential:

  • A first level university degree in communication, international relations, behavioural sciences or public health from an accredited/recognized institute.

Desirable:

  • Training in public health, health education, health promotion, or One Health.

Experience

Essential:

  • At least five years of related experience, at the national and international levels, in communication, health promotion, emergency management.

  • Experience in the development of risk communications and/or health promotion materials.

Desirable:

  • Prior working experience with WHO, the UN, health cluster partners, recognized humanitarian organizations or other international organizations, including at country level.

--> An excellent understanding of public health communication, advocacy and education with focus on emerging diseases issues, One Health approach, and the links and zoonoses.

--> An understanding of the role of WHO, FAO, OIE and UNEP in One Health.

--> Excellent interpersonal skills.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 62,120 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 4328 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
