Supervisor in Disability-Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction - National Position

Malteser International, the worldwide relief agency of the Order of Malta for humanitarian aid, works in more than 25 countries in Africa, Asia and the Americas for people in need, regardless of their religion, origin or political affiliation. Malteser International (MI) is working in Myanmar since 2001 and currently employs more than 350 national staff in Rakhine, Shan and Kayin states, where our work aims at ensuring communities have access to primary health care services. We also offer comprehensive WASH and disaster risk reduction/climate change adaptation solutions, and provide relief after disasters. MI strives to enable and empower the most vulnerable communities in marginalized areas through a participatory and sustainable approach.

In support of our work in Kayin State, Myanmar, Malteser International is looking for two motivated
 
Supervisors in Disability inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction (DiDRR) (m/f/d) - National position
 
As a Supervisor in DiDRR you will act as the focal person in implementing and coordinating all activities to the community and other DRR actors to achieve the project objectives.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct hazard vulnerability capacity assessments and other surveys under the guidance of the Project Manager (DiDRR) and facilitate the formation of community-based disaster risk management (CBDRM) committees
  • Facilitate Community based DiDRR related activities of CBDRM committees like DRR awareness, preparedness, vulnerable groups, evacuation, simulation exercise, early warning system etc.
  • Mobilize the target communities in disaster risk assessments, preparedness, planning and implementation of DiDRR programs
  • Ensure participation of the target group, local counterparts and partners to generate ownership; strengthen the capacity of CBDRM committees through regular trainings
  • Work closely with the Organization of Persons with disabilities’ (OPDs) members to enable people affected by disability to be influential in all aspects of the Disability Inclusive Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction program and liaise and coordinate with government departments (Department of Disaster Management, Department of Social Welfare, Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group members, partner organization etc.) and other relevant stakeholders
  • Actively participate in DiDRR related meetings, workshops and events, report progress and challenges to the Project Manager (DiDRR) regularly and ensure documentation of the project information and data
  • Take the roles and responsibilities for emergency response in case of any emergency in the project area and carry out other tasks assigned by the Project Manager (DiDRR) and Program Coordinator

Qualifications:

  • University Degree in DRR, environmental sciences, social sciences or a related field
  • At least 2 years of experience in DRR projects with UN or INGO or LNGO or CBO in a rural environment
  • Work experience on inclusive projects or persons with disabilities is an asset
  • Team player, excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills to deal with the local communities and authorities, able to work independently
  • Good general computer skills; Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and Power Point)
  • Excellent command of national Myanmar, English language and Local Karen (Sagaw/Poe) dialect is an asset
  • Understanding of challenges faced by rural communities in relation to poor health and lack of knowledge

Conditions: 

  • Start date: August 2021
  • Duty Station: Kayin State, Myanmar and its project areas
  • Duration of contract: until 31st December 2021 (extendable)
