Background

The UN Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) in Angola brings together all the UN entities working on sustainable development, emergency, recovery and transition in the country, and leads the United Nations Country Team (UNCT). Its main goal is to ensure joint planning and working together, and ensure the delivery of tangible results in support of the development agenda of the Government of Angola, through the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework—which guides the UN country team’s development programme cycle, in joint agreement with the Government. In March 2020, the Cooperation Framework between the Government of Angola and the UN System 2020-2022 was signed, which reflects the UN´s commitment in Angola to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, focusing on four strategic areas: Economic and Social Transformation; Adolescents, Youth and Women's Empowerment; Environment and Resilience of the Vulnerable Population, and Democracy and Stability.
The main functions of the resident coordinator office include but not limited to strategic analysis and planning; oversight of the UN country programming cycle; representation and support of UN Secretariat and UN Agencies including those without formal presence in Angola; support the national coordination systems and processes; development and management of shared operational support services; crisis management preparedness and response; external communication and advocacy; human rights and political Development; joint resource mobilization and fund management; and general UNCT oversight and coordination (RCO operations).

Under the direct supervision of the RC Team Leader, the intern will be hosted at the Resident Coordinator Office and he/she carry out tasks related to coordination in order to contribute to the functioning of the office, including performing substantive tasks, particularly those related to the support of the RC functions.  

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supports RCO on the overall monitoring of the implementation of strategic frameworks such as UNSDCF and Agenda 2030 by UN Agencies in Angola;  
  • Initiate draft papers, presentations and briefs
  • Organizes and prepare regular meetings by preparing documents for meetings: drafting, editing, updating and consolidating materials;
  • Follows up on activities under the responsibility of RCO, in particular of the Team  Leader;
  • Provides logistical assistance for missions, meetings and office events  
  • Supports administrative tasks;
  • Supports the general management of RCO office
  • Undertakes any other related duties as assigned.

Impact of Results

The key results have an impact on the success of the RCO activities. In particular, the key results have an impact on the design and implementation of UN programme activities, contributing to strengthen strategic partnerships for UNSDCF implementation.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:    
a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) in Political Sciences, International Relations, Pubic Administration, Economy or related social sciences
c) Have graduated with a university degree in Political Sciences, International Relations, Public Administration, Economy, or related social sciences (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Experience:    
No experience required, though it is desirable some practical knowledge of work such as drafting letters and minutes, drafting briefs, following up processes.

Language Requirements:    
Fluency in English
Good working knowledge of Portuguese is required.

Internship Other Conditions:Internships within the UN system are subject to following conditions, which the candidates should familiarize themselves with prior to applying:

  • UNDP/RCO will provide a stipend in the amount of USD 615 monthly (paid in local currency) in accordance with the provisions of the UNDP Internship Policy.;
  • Any further costs associated with the internship must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her arrangements for travel, accommodation and other costs;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for the medical and life insurance of the intern or costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship. The Intern must provide proof of enrolment in a health insurance plan;
  • UNDP does not provide assistance with travel and/or housing and the Intern will be responsible for obtaining the necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment within the UN System, but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship. The Intern will not be eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of internship;
  • Interns will need to use their own laptop/notebook. A workstation with wireless internet access will be provided at the RCO office and supervisory support provided by the RCO Team Leader;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP/RCO in any official capacity.
  • UNDP only accepts interns for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 6 months.
