Background Information - Afghanistan

Afghanistan

With more than 20 years of experience in the country, UNOPS Afghanistan focuses on providing maximum support to the Government and people of Afghanistan through delivery of projects and services in line with the government’s national priorities. The UNOPS Afghanistan Country Office (AFCO) serves as an organizational mechanism to deliver a range of projects for which UNOPS has been designated as the implementation agency. At present, UNOPS AFCO is implementing a number of projects in a range of sectors including infrastructure (roads, bridges, justice and security, health, and water supply) development, procurement services, HR services, capacity building, and humanitarian protection, amongst others, on behalf of the Government of Afghanistan, the international donor community, and other UN agencies.
The functional objective of UNOPS AFCO is to contribute to the achievement of the development outcomes sought by the Government of Afghanistan. The aim of UNOPS AFCO is to provide efficient and cost-effective implementation services on behalf of all our partners to support the reconstruction and development of the country. Background Information - Job-specific

The AutoCAD Operator will report to the Senior Civil Engineer as her/his primary supervisor. Working as part of the AFCO Design Management Unit (DMU), will provide quality AutoCAD services in line with drafting standards timely in a professional manner, and will assist the engineers and other technical staff in developing drawings. 

She/he will be expected to, but not limited to, perform the following duties and responsibilities:

Functional Responsibilities

  • Preparation of drawings and details for roads, water supply networks, sanitary water networks, structures ( protection walls, retaining walls, aprons, bridges, culverts, water canals, siphons, towers, etc..), buildings (including structures and architectural drawings), electric installations, and others as and whenever specified by the supervisor using AutoCAD applications;

  • Prepares engineering drawings utilizing AutoCAD applications for such features as site plans, foundation and plans, front, rear and side elevations, cross sections and schedules.

  • Interact with engineers and designers and accurately create drawings during the design process.

  • Maintain drawing files and coordinate document distribution to other components.

  • Understand the uses of drawing levels, reference files and AutoCAD tools.

  • Familiar with drafting and document practices in an engineering office with focus on architectural / civil engineering.

  • Fill in technical details using drawings, rough sketches, specifications and calculations made by the engineers and surveyors.

  • Processing Topographic raw Survey data through AutoCAD/Civil 3D.

OTHER TASKS

  • Assist Estimation and Costing engineers in the estimation and calculation of the bill of quantities (BoQ).

  • Review and prepare design changes proposed by the Infrastructure Team and modify the quantities as required.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor as needed.

  • Assist the surveying team in the visits to the project site. 

Education/Experience/Language requirements

a. Education
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in AutoCAD Operator field is required. 

  • Relevant certifications or trainings related to AutoCAD software are an advantage.


b. Experience
  • At least 2 years of progressively relevant experience as AutoCAD Operator in engineering and/or construction companies is required.

  • Previous experience from the UN/UNOPS or development organizations is an asset.

  • Knowledge of UN/UNOPS rules and regulations preferred. 

  • Proficient in the current version of AutoCAD is required.

  • Understanding of construction, working drawings, and engineering  terms and standards is required.

  • Working knowledge of MS Office applications with advanced MS. Excel skills.

  • Familiarity with advanced engineering drawing tools is an asset.

  • Able and willing to travel to all provinces within Afghanistan, including insecure and dangerous areas.

  • Excellent knowledge of both written and oral English is required.
