BACKGROUND  
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 26 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency. 

SCOPE OF WORK: The Family Reunification Intern will work within the Resettlement Department at the IRC Silver Spring, MD Office. S/he will work with office staff, community members and relevant partners to identify potential applicants, explain program requirements, gather data and documentation; help prepare and submit forms for Central American Minors-Affidavit of Relationship (CAM-AOR) and other family reunification petitions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist casework staff to complete CAM-AOR and other family reunification applications, verify required documentation and communicating with clients. 

  • Assist in maintaining databases related to programs.

  • Engage in outreaching efforts that will educate and inform our community about the IRC and services we provide.

  • Assist the CaseworkSupervisor and Senior Caseworker in managing clients’ cases and maintaining case files.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Intern will gain US field-office experience by interacting with and assisting the populations we serve. 

  • Intern will acquire knowledge of IRC programs and public benefits available for refugees, asylees and other during their resettlement period.

  • Intern will learn reporting requirements for resettlement agencies and how to capture data to improve services.

  • Intern will the various immigration processes and procedures refugees and asylees encounter.
