Organizational Background

The Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization with its headquarters in Vienna is the international organization setting up the global verification system foreseen under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), which is the treaty banning any nuclear-weapon-test explosion or any other nuclear explosion. The Treaty provides for a global verification regime, including a network of 337 stations worldwide, a communications system, an international data centre and on-site inspections to monitor compliance.

Organizational Setting

This position is located in the Scientific Methods Unit, Software Applications Section, International Data Centre (IDC) Division. 

Reporting Lines

Under the supervision of the Head, Scientific Methods Unit, to: 

Duties and Responsibilties

  1. Conduct projects to improve and evaluate the performance of seismo-acoustic and/or hydroacoustic data processing and data fusion algorithms and systems;
  2. Develop, optimize and calibrate signal detection, signal association, event location and event characterization algorithms;
  3. Perform research and lead development in areas including signal detection, phase association, signal propagation, receiver effects, event location and source mechanisms;
  4. Define requirements and supervise the development of new software;
  5. Plan, manage and evaluate work done by external contractors in the area of seismo-acoustic and/or hydroacoustic research and development;
  6. Perform other duties as assigned.

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in seismo-acoustics and/or hydroacoustic, geophysics, seismology, acoustics or a related field.

Work Experience and Qualifications

  • At least seven (7) years relevant working experience with geophysical methods and data processing techniques; experience in the use of UNIX/LINUX operating systems and with large databases, in particular Oracle/SQL databases, knowledge of data analysis and display software; experience in quantitative research using computers and processing large volumes of data; knowledge of seismo-acoustic and/or hydroacoustic data processing is an advantage;
  • Knowledge of theoretical seismo-acoustic and/or hydroacoustic issues related to monitoring events in diverse environments;
  • Ability to improve the performance of widely dispersed seismo-acoustic and/or hydroacoustic monitoring stations for event detection, location and identification;
  • Knowledge of computational seismo-acoustics and/or hydroacoustic, linear and non-linear acoustics;
  • Knowledge of signal processing related to seismo-acoustics and/or hydroacoustic signal detection;
  • Ability to use knowledge of theory for the design, development and implementation of research to improve operational seismo-acoustic and/or hydroacoustic monitoring;
  • Knowledge of computer simulation modeling techniques to improve seismo-acoustic and/or hydroacoustic data analysis methods;

Languages

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential;
  • Knowledge of other official CTBTO languages is desirable.

Remuneration:

CTBTO offers an attractive compensation and benefits package in accordance with the policies of the International Civil Service Commission. The salary offered may be subject to deductions to the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund and Health Insurance Scheme.
