The Role

At Last Mile Health (LMH), we dig data. Are you able to build and maintain complex databases that ensure the integrity and accessibility of large volumes of data in support of public health programs?  If so, you could be the Monitoring, Evaluation, Research, and Learning (MERL) team’s Data Architect.

As Last Mile Health’s (LMH) mission evolves and expands into more countries in Africa, its data storage, collection, and reporting needs have been evolving and expanding as well. To accommodate this evolution and expansion, LMH is in the process of designing and developing a next generation data warehouse and portal based on best in class solutions for data collection, storage, and reporting.  The Data Architect will be responsible for leading in the design and development of the next generation data warehouse and portal.

This position is open to candidates located in Liberia, Malawi, Uganda, or on the Eastern seaboard of the United States (Boston or NYC preferred). Candidates must have work authorization in one of the countries listed above. 

What You'll Do

  • Develop a plan for the design and development of the next generation data portal and the migration of data and code logic from the current one.
  • Gather and review requirements from stakeholders (e.g. LMH staff, partner organizations, Ministries of Health) for the next generation of Last Mile Data, LMH’s data portal.
  • Research and recommend off-the-shelf data integration, data storage, business intelligence (BI), and content management system (CMS) software and cloud solutions.
  • Research and prototype off-the-shelf Monitoring & Evaluation vendor data management and reporting tools.
  • Mentor junior IT staff in the development of the next generation data portal and migration from current data portal.
  • MERL subject matter expert on ODK Collect/Central apps for surveys and evaluations, QGIS mapping, and DHIS2.
  • Support Data Engineer in the ongoing administration, maintenance, and development of the current data portal.
  • Develop and administer a production instance of MySQL on a Linux server running at scale, storing over 1.5 million permanent and unique records.

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in computer or information science, but mathematics, statistics, or other relevant scientific discipline is fine.
  • 7+ years of experience in the development of complicated software and database systems.
  • The ability to design a complicated data warehouse system and understand deeply each of its functional components and how they interact with one another.
  • The ability to project manage the technical development of a complicated software and database system through all of its phases: planning, design, development, testing, release, and ongoing support.
  • Expertise in SQL programming and developing normalized and dimensional data models. 
  • The ability to program in at least one scripting language, such as Python or PHP.
  • Experience developing dashboards and data visualizations using any BI tool, such as Tableau, PowerBI, Google Data Studio, or Periscope.
  • Experience developing data pipelines using data integration or ETL tools.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, especially Excel
  • Excellent written and verbal and communication skills, including the ability to communicate across cultural settings and with non-technologists

As LMH strives to increase transparency into our compensation principles we are highlighting below more details around our compensation policy and benefits associated with this position. In line with our compensation principles, this position will pay at the 50th to 60th percentile of the market to which you are employed. We look forward to answering any questions you may have during the hiring process. 

Compensation range: $85,000 - $118,000 dependent upon experience doing an equivalent role
