The IRC in Dallas’ New Roots Program seeks to support clients’ immediate food security needs and ensure long-term stability in client nutrition. The New Roots Specialist, as part of a team, will implement the Making Food Accessible project aimed at building knowledge and skills so clients can better navigate their local food system and live in food secure households. The New Roots Specialist will be working with clients, both one-on-one and in groups, to identify barriers to accessing nutritious, culturally appropriate foods and provide coaching to enhance the food system and nutritional knowledge of clients to achieve increased levels of food security.


·Receive client referrals and conduct initial client assessments, identify barriers to food access or overall health, set goals, provide one-on-one food system coaching, and regular follow up;

·Work with IRC and third-party interpreters to communicate with clients

·Conduct emergency food deliveries for food insecure clients

·Implement new tools and maps for budgeting and locating food

·Deliver group instruction in food navigation and nutrition, both in-person and remotely, as necessary

·Lead logistics planning for all group instruction sessions, including scheduling, transportation, space, and interpretation

·Collaborate with the New Roots Coordinator to ensure foundational food navigation and nutrition skills are integrated into programming curriculum

·Liaise with Caseworkers, Benefits Navigator and other team members to ensure successful plans are developed for enhancing clients’ food navigation and nutrition skills

·Coordinate services with the national New Roots network to ensure a holistic approach to moving individuals and entire families forward

·Monitor and evaluate progress through client assessments and data tracking in Efforts to Outcomes (ETO) and Excel. Complete a final program assessment

·Ensure that services are delivered in accordance with relevant quality assurance standards;

·Participate in training and professional development relevant to the role

·Other related duties as assigned


·Undergraduate degree is preferred

·Minimum of 2 years relevant work experience in human services field is ideal

·Experience with the education and or nutrition programming

·Previous experience working with refugees or immigrants preferred

·Fluency in English, both spoken and written, is required

·Fluency in Arabic, Rohingya, Dari, Burmese, Kiswahili, Nepali or other languages and cultures of the local refugee population is strongly preferred

·Excellent verbal and written communication skills

·Effective, professional presentation skills

·Proficient in general office software programs, e.g., MS Office suite, email, internet applications and relational databases (familiarity with Efforts to Outcomes particularly valuable)

·Proven ability to work as a team member in a cross-cultural environment

·Detail oriented with excellent organizational skills, ability to multi-task and complete work in a fast-paced environment

·Valid driver’s license, reliable access to vehicle with current insurance, and the ability to travel regularly throughout the service delivery area preferred


·Standard office work environment combined with considerable time in the field and in neighborhoods where clients live and work

·Travel in and around Dallas/Ft. Worth to facilitate service delivery, build community relationships and represent the IRC with community partners

·Staff work remotely on a part-time to full-time basis per current office COVID safety protocols

·Hours outside of typical office hours required at times
