Background

The UN Secretary-General's bold new global reform agenda launched on 1 January 2019, in response to General Assembly resolution 71/243, repositions the UN Development System to deliver on the 2030 Agenda for dignity, prosperity, and peace on a healthy planet. Central to this process, and as further mandated by General Assembly resolution 72/279, a new generation of UN Resident Coordinator Offices across the world are being strengthened under the leadership of an empowered UN Resident Coordinator, the highest-ranking representative of the UN Development System at country level.

In order to effectively coordinate the collective work of UN Country Teams in support of national aspirations, Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) enhanced core capacities will include expertise in coordination and strategic planning, economics, tailored policy support, results monitoring and evaluation, strategic partnerships and robust communications. The Resident Coordinator leads the United Nations Team for Saudi Arabia, which is represented by several United Nations agencies, funds and programmes.

Of the operational agencies comprising the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) for Saudi Arabia, there are 20 in total. Twelve agencies, funds and programs present in country, out of which three are principally in support of operations in Yemen. Eight operate through regional offices and (or) HQs.

Under the direct supervision of the RCO Senior Economist, the Interns will supports the efforts of the RCO and the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) to ensure a well-researched, analytical, coordinated and harmonized response of the UN system.

The Research Assistants (Interns) will work with the RCO Senior Economist to provide well researched literature reviews, policy briefs, monitoring papers, etc. to enhance and accelerate development of the KSA towards achieving Vision 2030 and the SDGs.

This is a call for 3 Internships, which are Home-Based & Un-Paid. The interns will gain insights into the work of the UN at the country level, the research done within RCO (look at this blog for some details https://saudiarabia.un.org/en/123906-rco-economics-3-questions-every-resident-coordinator-can-explore-about-their-countrys-sdgs and this page for the research papers https://saudiarabia.un.org/en/resources/publications), and the coordination, outreach, partnerships and communication efforts done by the office and the Resident Coordinator herself. We will try to tailor the specific tasks of each intern to suit their specific strenghts. This internships can be also done concurrently to studying, if the needed time out of studying is devoted to the tasks. The RCO will also support the professional development of the interns, encourage the interns to grow and pursue other opportunities, and will be flexible in releasing the interns early when such opportunities in the best interest of the interns arise. That being said, the internship does not hold any promise from the RCO side for future eployment within the United Nations.
