Role

To provide IT & digital security specialist support to human rights and environmental defender organisations to review and improve IT & digital security management, with both in-field and remote working requirements (including in high-risk territories).

What We Are Looking For

We are currently expanding our team and are looking for someone that has the capability to deliver the IT/digital security components of Kamara’s risk management programmes and research/investigation projects.  

The role provides direct support to organisations ranging from decentralised grassroots community groups to institutionalised NGOs with a global presence, supporting with risk mitigation ranging from non-targeted financially-motivated attackers to APT groups utilising home-grown and off-the-shelf toolkits such as Pegasus. This includes auditing, participatory prioritisation, culturally-aware end user and admin education, incident triage (and occasionally response), and project management of the implementation of various mitigation measures.  

Beyond direct support, the aim is to build capacity within the organisation, with accessible guidance, devising and delivering workshops (both virtual and in-person), and ongoing management support.  Our model is to work with organisations over a longer period of time rather than a one-off training and candidates should be committed to tailoring their approach around concepts that aim to build capacity at local level within the individuals, communities or organisations we work with in order for support solutions to be sustainable.

Responsibilities & Tasks:

  • Managing projects assigned, ensuring efficient planning, communication and delivery of projects/services on time and on budget in coordination with IT/Digital Security Manager & General Manager (UK)

  • Field work and remote follow up for digital aspects of the holistic risk management programme implementation including conducting risk assessments, context analysis and mapping, workshops, devising and delivering IT/digital security management plans, protocols and reviews

  • Remain up-to-date on techniques, methodologies and current field landscape for IT and digital security management and investigations

  • Train and mentor local teams, developing the skills and capacities of local organisations, individuals or networks Kamara supports

  • Create and maintain a contact network of local ITC providers in order to ensure communications and ITC local purchase quality;

  • Contribute to the development and shaping of Kamara’s house-style methodologies including risk management curriculum, research/investigation approach and strategic actions

 

It is essential that candidates have:

  • Cultural and gender awareness and sensitivity, experience working with multicultural partners. 

  • A minimum of 3 years of work experience in IT and digital security, ideally for human rights or environmental activist organisations 

  • Proven experience with Windows/Linux-based and OS IT infrastructure and working in cloud-based environments; advanced conceptual understanding of endpoint protection, SEIM, firewall, WAF and DDOS products 

  • Ability to translate complex technology concepts into everyday language 

  • Experience in design and development of training programs, and in the delivery of diverse training methods or activities (e.g. scenario-based simulations, mentoring, on-the-job training)

  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team and also to work self-manage working independently 

  • Ability to work across multiple timezones (from SE Asia to LATAM)

  • Ability to travel (when pandemic restrictions are suitable)

  • Fluency in English (both written and spoken)

 

The candidate must also have at least one of the following preferred experiences:

  • Personal experience in diverse activist communities

  • Experience in setting up secure work environments in small and medium organisations in higher-risk scenarios

  • Professional qualifications and certificates in digital security

  • Professional qualifications in IT

  • Additional languages

 

Terms

An initial 1 year fixed-term consultancy (subject to standard probation and termination provisions) with the potential to evolve into a full-time permanent position.   We work remotely but meet regularly in London.  Remuneration will be commensurate to level of experience.
