  • IRC Background:

    Founded in 1933, the IRC is a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. In the U.S., the IRC resettles approximately 11,000 refugees per year and provides numerous program services to assist the refugee from their arrival through citizenship. The IRC in Salt Lake City opened it office in 1994, and provides resettlement services through extended case management to newly arrived refugees for up to 24-months as well as over twenty different programs to educate and empower refugees.

    Job Overview:

    Spice Kitchen Incubator is a food business incubator assisting low-to-moderate income individuals, primarily refugees, asylum seekers and asylees, and other new Americans to start food businesses that leverage their natural culinary talent, create a sufficient source of income for their household and contribute to the diversity of Salt Lake City’s food scene.

    This position will be part of a fast-paced environment and team that focuses on market access and income generation through logistics and hands-on work. The Summer Associate will be responsible for supporting the kitchen and events team with event coordination and execution, e-commerce sales and growth, and identifying sustainable practices and educational opportunities to ensure entrepreneurs have long-term access to income generating markets avenues.

    AmeriCorps receive a living allowance for the time served, which is equivalent to the amount received by full-time members serving in the area, and the choice between a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award or an end-of-service summer stipend. Only those Summer Associates who successfully complete their full term of service are eligible to receive the education award or end-of-service summer stipend.

    Major Responsibilities:

    The Value Chain Coordination VISTA will work with entrepreneurs and the Spice Kitchen Incubator team to develop networks between viable agricultural producers, value-added and culinary producers, and retail markets to create a value chain that generates economic opportunity for those involved. Additionally, the VISTA will provide training and access to other tools and resources that allow socially disadvantaged entrepreneurs to be able to successfully develop purchasing networks and market locally produced value-added products that utilize locally grown ingredients. This position will focus on event coordination and management, e-commerce, and community engagement.

    Identify viable produce to utilize for in-season extension and extended shelf-life based on market research (demand), cost, and resources needs to implement the use of theseproducts.

    Produce multi-lingual trainings and toolkits with the help of industry experts on procurement, recipe costing, price-setting, branding and marketing for packaged foodproducts.

    Refine, present, and distribute workshop curriculum(s) related to packaged products, pitch decks, permitting, licensing and e-commercesystems

    Design a client-centered monitoring and evaluation plan for program managers and stakeholders to predict and measure business growth rates as a result of developing valuechain

    Record outputs and project data using online databases and software like Microsoft Suite, Google Suite, andPodio

    Provide one-on-one technical support related to packaged or preparedproducts

    Incorporate market research results and develop business operations to increaseparticipant capacity for sales independent of Spice Kitchen’s marketing opportunities.

    Develop entrepreneurs’ digital literacy skills and familiarity with permitting and licensing regulations, including product review and approval, renewal of necessary permits and food safety inspections asneeded.

     Ensure profitability of products and identify areas to substitute local produce via recipe costing and menu development Coordinate meetings with food/farm organizations and service agencies in order to build a network of interested farmers, value-added and culinary (VA&C) producers, and retail and wholesale markets across theWasatch

    oMonthly “living allowance” of $1,116 (pre-taxes) paid in biweekly installments. 
    •End-of-Service Benefit
    oThis is a full-time contract and commitment for the course of one year (365 days). Upon successful completion of the contract, the AmeriCorps VISTA will receive one of two end-of-service benefits: 1) Segal AmeriCorps Education Award equivalent to $6,345 (to be used to pay for education costs at eligible institutions of higher education, for educational training, or to repay eligible student loans), OR 2) a $1,800 Cash Stipend.

    oClose-of-Service Allowance: Same amount as Relocation Travel Allowance if moving back to permanent residence once service year is completed.
