Short Description

Background

In the framework of the UNESCO Programme and Budget 2020-2021 (40 C/5) and in line with the activities of the Ecohydrology, Water Quality and Water Education Section (SC/HYD/EQE) addressing Theme 6 “Water Education, Key for Water Security” of the eighth phase of the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP-VIII), and in particular following IHP Council Resolution XXIII-8 about the development of a methodology for an effective indicator on water education in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Associate Project Officer will support the final development and application of the methodological approach for the indicator on water education at the tertiary level of the formal education systems in UNESCO’s Member States and Associate Members.

Sufficient installed national capacities, both at the human and institutional levels, constitute a necessary condition to give sustainability to the achievements of Sustainable Development Goal 6 and related targets of the 2030 Agenda. Presently, there is no global tool to evaluate the human capacities of the water sector at the national level. With the objective of assessing water education at the tertiary level, the new indicator will measure and enable the monitoring over time of water-related diploma degrees and graduates.

OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Section SC/HYD/EQE, the incumbent will work in close relation with relevant responsible officers to:

  • Support the process to identify focal points in UNESCO's Member States and Associate Members, with particular emphasis on LDCs and SIDS, for the interaction in the context of the new water education indicator.
  • Prepare guidelines for UNESCO's Member States and Associate Members that will guide the collection of data about water-related diploma degrees and graduates, so that two methodological approaches for the new water education indicator may be applied.
  • Adapt the questionnaire to be used for gathering data on water education at the tertiary level of the formal education system in UNESCO's Member States and Associate Members.
  • Support the interaction process with UNESCO's Member States and Associate Members regarding data collection on water-related diploma degrees and graduates.
  • Support the process of the initial analysis and reporting of data from UNESCO's Member States and Associate Members regarding water-related diploma degrees and graduates.
  • Contribute to the design of a dedicated data acquisition platform that will allow the storage, management and reporting of data regarding water-related diploma degrees and graduates.
