Organizational Setting

 

The Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Technology (NEFW) comprises the Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Materials Section, the Waste Technology Section, the Decommissioning & Environmental Remediation Section and the Research Reactor Section. The Division seeks to support Member States in building their capacity to access technologies, to share good practices and to develop safe and effective approaches across all aspects of research reactors, nuclear fuel cycle, decommissioning, radioactive waste management and environmental remediation.


The Decommissioning and Environmental Remediation Section (D&ERS) assists Member States with building their capacity to decommission any nuclear related facilities and environmental remediation of any sites contaminated with radioactive material, including NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material). It cooperates with other sections and especially with the two teams in WTS in charge of radioactive waste management (pre-disposal and disposal). Efforts are focused mainly on the elaboration and implementation of comprehensive and integrated decommissioning and environmental remediation policies and strategies, the development of supporting infrastructure, the promotion of good practices for sustainable, safe and cost-effective project planning, implementation and completion; enabling access to current scientific and technological developments, along with the provision of direct assistance through the technical cooperation programme.
 

 

Main Purpose

 

The Consultant will provide technical expertise for implementation of some of the outcomes of the IAEA led International Conference on Management of NORM in Industry (NORM2020), held on 19 – 30 October 2020, specifically regarding  the implementation of a series of activities to support the development of guidance material on the revalorization of NORM residues (in the context of the circular economy) and good international practices related to the decommissioning of NORM related facilities. The consultant will work in the design and development of an Environmental Remediation Resource Portal, provide technical expertise for Technical and Consultant meetings' preparation and implementation and develop technical reports in the field of NORM residue management.

 

Functions / Key Results Expected

 

• Collect information on status of environmental remediation projects from Member States as an input for a structured database containing relevant technical data about the implementation of such projects.
• Provide technical expertise in establishing the design and relevant features of the Environmental Remediation Resource Portal.
• Provide technical expertise and implement Technical and Consultant meetings to further develop technical reports on subject areas of NORM waste revalorization and decommissioning of NORM related facilities.
• Draft and edit  technical reports resulting from the above-mentioned activities and finalize ongoing reports in the field of NORM residue management.

 

 

Qualifications and Experience

 

  • University degree in environmental engineering. 
  • Experience in working with web based tools in support of networking and database platforms. 
  • Minimum one year of experience with environmental related projects or programmes at national or international level.
  • Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.

 

Remuneration

The remuneration for this consultancy is a daily fee of up to a maximum of € 150, based on qualifications and experience. In case duty travel is required within the assignment, a daily subsistence allowance (DSA) and travel costs are provided. Health coverage and pension fund are the responsibility of the incumbent.
