Galileo System Deployment Engineer in the Galileo G1 System Exploitation Unit in the Galileo G1 System AIV and Deployment Service, Galileo First Generation Project Office, Galileo Programme Department, Directorate of Navigation.

Galileo teams at the European Space Agency’s technology centre in the Netherlands are in charge of the design, development, procurement, integration and qualification of the Galileo system, including the constellation of satellites in medium-Earth orbit and the ground segment for mission control and security monitoring deployed at remote sites all over the world.


You will report to the Head of the Galileo First Generation (G1) System Exploitation Unit and will act in coordination with the Head of the Ground Mission Segment and Ground Segment Security Management Service, in the management of the following activities:

  • Following up and coordinating day-to-day ground segment and system AIV and deployment activities liaising with contractors, EUSPA, the operators and the hosting entity;
  • Following up the on-site AIV and deployment planning through participation to the Mid-Term Planning Meetings (MTPs) and Change Control Boards (CCBs);
  • Liaising with the ESA Project Office in ESTEC;
  • Reviewing AIV documentation (RVM, Test Cases, Test Procedures), especially those related to Site AIV activities;
  • Supporting the Delivery Review Boards (DRB) and their associated test campaigns;
  • Following up qualification activities both at segment and system level, reviewing the evidence contributed by the developing contractor;
  • Following up deployment activities both at segment and system level contributing to the planning and implementation;
  • Following up the test campaigns, in particular for tests executed on site. This includes attending Test readiness reviews, witnessing test execution, reviewing test results and test logs and approval of the corresponding qualification evidence;
  • Following up the investigation and correction of incident and anomalies, either at segment level (internal) or resulting from system/OPS activities (external), ensuring that critical issues are solved with maximum priority;
  • Supporting system AIV activities such as ground-to-space compatibility tests and IOT tests;
  • Participating, when requested, in Galileo-related reviews and technical evaluation boards, in particular contributing to qualification reviews, Delivery Review Boards, system and operations reviews;
  • Contributing to ESA procurement activities (preparing ITT documents, evaluating proposals, negotiating, and managing the resulting contracts) for topics related to AIV and deployments;
  • Acting as the on-site ESA crypto custodian.

In performing these duties, you are expected to interface closely with the various G1 Project teams (PA, Security etc.), the Operations Teams and the related industrial teams.

A Master's degree in physics, electrical or aerospace engineering or a related field is required for this post.

Additional requirements

At least 5 years’ experience in system-level testing, integration and deployments, including organisation of the related campaigns. Good knowledge of ground segment infrastructure, satellite/mission operations and GNSS ground infrastructure systems.

Proven experience in the verification, integration and deployment of complex satellite systems, with several satellites and ground stations, providing services to users, is an asset.
Knowledge of GNSS technology and infrastructure will be considered an asset.
You should be able to demonstrate that you can handle pressure and conflict as may typically occur in a project team. You should be result-oriented, able to set priorities, and capable of presenting practical solutions both verbally and in writing.

You must be prepared to travel on a regular basis, as many of the activities will take place on operational sites or at the AIV factories.
Candidates must be eligible for security clearance by their national security administration.
