Background

UN Women is mandated with gender equality and the empowerment of women; a global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide. It supports Member States set and implements global standards for achieving gender equality and coordinates gender within the United Nations. UN Women is headquartered in New York and has a presence in 76 countries, with 6 regional offices and 7 liaison offices. UN Women’s Strategic Plan for 2022-2025 focuses on four thematic outcomes: Women’s leadership; Women’s economic empowerment; Ending violence against women and girls; and Women’s engagement in peace, security, and humanitarian action. As part of its work for women’s economic empowerment, UN Women is mandated to ensure that all women have income security, decent work, and economic autonomy (Outcome 3 of UN Women’s Strategic Plan).

Women in West and Central Africa represent the most deprived group of the population in spite of their paramount social and economic role. They have limited access to, and control over critical resources, as a result of social, cultural, and economic norms. UN Women’s work to support women’s economic empowerment in the region is centered around: (i) Improving women’s access to climate resilient agricultural value chains and green jobs in the context of the transition to the green economy; (ii) Promoting and strengthening women entrepreneurship; (ii) Enhancing women’s income security and social protection; and (iv) engendering macro-economic policies.
